After much toing and froing I concluded that fotoi's shot is taken from one street further back than RDWP's. RDWP's was taken from near Via San Pio X and fotoi's from Lungotevere Castello, near Piazza Pia. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Thinking the different lens perspectives (70 mm vs. 43 mm) helped with the mystery; also explains why no barrier across Via della Conciliazione in my pic. Sharp eyes and good recon work all round!
