Probably one of the more difficult angles at Road Atlanta...short window to pick up the car at over 100mph...it took me several laps to get just one frame that was sharp.

and a 1/30 same meeting, amazing how shallow the DoF is at close range - just the door graphics in focus

Hi David, it's not shallow DoF. It's that different parts of the car are moving at a different angular velocity in relation to the photographer. See more detailed explanation at post #9028 in this thread.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Yep know that one BUT that usually means the front or rear would be sharp as it's the closest point BUT following that rule the door of the car is sticking out and the front and rear are yet to 'catch up'. Interesting effect however it's happened.

Here is another with the door of the car sharp and the front and rear less so. I think the key is which part of the car is travelling across the frame at the same angular velocity as you are panning at, and the slower the shutter speed and faster the pan the greater the effect.

Whereas this one it is clearly the centre of the front bar.

Same effect on planes too - here the pilots are is sharp yet the noses and tails are not.

10.24.20 Glen Helen MX park in Southern California.
Trying to incorporate some of the very useful tips / lessons that the forum members here have shared with me. Thank you!! My goal, if I can get to 1/2 of the quality of these great member's photo's I will be a happy camper...lol
Unfortunately, Southern California summers are hot and dry, trying to capture some foliage to improve the back rounds is almost impossible.

As you say interesting effect. The other types of movement that affect the shot are roll pitch and yaw, it could be whilst the car is moving across the shot, the car is also rotating around the point that is in focus, with the movement more extreme further from the point of rotation. It’s obviously more pronounced with slower shutter speeds. I see it on occasion when the car hits a bump. In the image below, Marcus is accelerating hard with the front rising or pitching up and not so sharp. The decals around the rear axle are sharper suggesting the axis of the pitch rotation is the axle.
