Well these are lower ISO than some of the others (around 2000), still fairly heavy crops. In terms of camera setting differences though what I tried on this day were a combination of shutter speeds between 1/1000-1/1600 both with IS in mode I and IS off completely. I didn't discern a noticeable difference in quality of focus or sharpness with any combination.

The only other things that were different were firmware 1.1.1, and reducing the accel / decel tracking from +1 to the default of 0.

More with the R5, this time with the RF 70-200. Finding I really like shooting soccer on this size field with the shorter lens.

I like the look I get from 2.8 but I feel like 80% of the action is out of reach with 200 mm. I like to shoot from near the corners so I can cover both goals with the zoom and get the faces of the attacking team. I use a 100-400 now but would probably upgrade to the 100-500 when deals become available.

I usually shoot from the corners with the 100-400 as well, but yeah that look from the 2.8 is great. Just need to convince the wife that I need a 300 or 400 2.8 ߘ.

I expect next year when my daughter moves up to the high school field I¢ll definitely be wanting the extra reach of the 100-400.

I'd recommend the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 Sport lens for soccer/football. I've used it for national and International football and it works as well as the Canon 300f2.8, it's more versatile and about half the price.

Tested a remote camera behind the goals on Saturday, triggered using a guitar pedal footswitch. Takes a bit of getting used to, in terms of getting your brain to think of when to press the switch when you're also operating the main camera body and 400mm lens, but less hassle than mounting the transmitter on the main camera body and firing off loads of shots you don't need, or switching the transmitter on and off during a game.

No HS or college soccer around here this year but my kids played in a youth summer travel league, it was nice to shoot some sports again.

So glad soccer is back!

I heard California club teams are going to Arizona to compete because we can't even have scrimmages here. I have a new camera and no games to shoot. vmad

I haven't heard anything about it here yet, but that would be great. We had such a low turnout this season that they combined three cities leagues together just to make a decent schedule.

Our numbers are about 25-30% of last fall. The schools didn't even issue field permits until late September with so many restrictions that practically the only thing the kids could do is juggle, dribble, and practice footwork. Thankfully the coach isn't being quite so restrictive but it still sucks not having any real games. Hopefully this spring will loosen up.

Still experimenting with the behind the goals remote camera triggered by foot switch. I've now built a small support plate and added two 8mm threaded bars covered with silicon tubing to try and protect the camera gear from stray shots or high balls dropping on the gear from height. When you've £000 of gear sitting exposed the last thing you need is getting it whacked.

A fun little series...

First, player hits players.

Next, players hit the ground.

Finally, player wakes up, confused.
