Where the 85GM excels pulls away from other lenses is when backgrounds get busy and there is a lot of hard light in the frame. Where a lot of lenses have a very contrasty look that can lead to harsh rendering in contrasty light, the 85GM always has a pleasing portrait render no matter what you throw at it....not just the blur, but the overall rendering.

First example is good one but to me it didn't do well in the 3rd one. Now all that could be due to what the background is and how far it is.

I got out for a little shutter therapy tonight...Hurricane Zeta's remnants blew through town this morning and I was hoping for a wild light sunset...

Thanks

I have a monopod as well that I use to hold the heavy glass, I find that I just can't hold the heavier glass effectively any longer but it's a pain to pan vertically even with a monopod head. I've been toying with the idea of using a compact gimbal mounted on a tripod to see how that would work out, there are a couple of videos out there by individuals who do that and it looks like it might be a good solution to not have to carry around a tripod.

Looks like I will be doing a bit more birding in the near future.

Jose, google Steve Perry gimbal on monopod. Excellent treatise on using a gimbal on a monopod obviously...that is what led to me using a Jobu Jr. on a monopod at first, then upgrading to the Wimberly monopod head which is way way smaller/lighter/easier to pack.
I thought of another place where I used it a whole lot-Basque del Apache, where we stood in the 12F for over an hour waiting for blast off. I had to be ready at any time but couldn't/didn't want to shoulder the weight that long.

Here it is, the Wimberly Monogibal, pure genius-

For those of you who have been to Death Valley how hard will it be to park on the side of the road and camp inside my van? I'm led to believe that it isn't going to be a problem. Any input would be appreciated.

AOD, scan this page, I've been a couple of times-

For the rare that carry cameras several thousand feet vertical on foot this camera is a gem among gems.
This would be my dream carry-

I wasn’t really sure about the silver top on this body but it actually looks really good in this photo (Sony should hire you to do their marketing photos :) ). How’s the MF experience on that body?

Agree with Eddie - the silver top looks great in this image Carlo. I’d probably play it safe with the black version, but this has me thinking.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the EVF usability. That’s my main concern of this camera as an upgrade to my A7ii.

Really smooth for vertical panning.

Thanks for the info Robert, the monogimbal looks interesting, it is certainly small and would be easy to pack and carry however given the placement of the camera off-axis how well does it balance on the monopod? Seems odd.

I've ordered a super compact full gimbal from FotoPro, very lightweight at only 1.5lbs, just not sure how well it will do on top of a monopod but after watching Steve Perry's video it might just work fine.
