Thanks
I have a monopod as well that I use to hold the heavy glass, I find that I just can't hold the heavier glass effectively any longer but it's a pain to pan vertically even with a monopod head. I've been toying with the idea of using a compact gimbal mounted on a tripod to see how that would work out, there are a couple of videos out there by individuals who do that and it looks like it might be a good solution to not have to carry around a tripod.
Looks like I will be doing a bit more birding in the near future.
Jose, google Steve Perry gimbal on monopod. Excellent treatise on using a gimbal on a monopod obviously...that is what led to me using a Jobu Jr. on a monopod at first, then upgrading to the Wimberly monopod head which is way way smaller/lighter/easier to pack.
I thought of another place where I used it a whole lot-Basque del Apache, where we stood in the 12F for over an hour waiting for blast off. I had to be ready at any time but couldn't/didn't want to shoulder the weight that long.
Here it is, the Wimberly Monogibal, pure genius-
