I took the lens with me to the park a few days ago, just to see how useful it would be there. What surprised me was how close 6 meter MFD is! I mean, it sounds so much, but I was able to shoot magpies frame filling. They were so close that I expected not to be able to focus, but I could. I didn't process any of those shots, but here's one of a Magpie also not far away. Just finishing a molt, I think. Maybe he's a youngster. He had something wrong with his foot or leg. Limping and pulling it up to protect it. I hope he makes it.

Sorry, I missed your comment!

Yeah, a lot of options make it hard to choose. In the end I don't think it makes much difference though. I would just go with what makes me feel good. For me that's Canon, because I only have Canon gear. That made it easier for me. Although I came close to jumping ship to Nikon (D500+500PF lens). Glad I didn't and waited. I'm quite happy with my new gear, even though I still have to fully adapt to the mirrorless experience! :p

Cool. I think it's a very useable lens. I'm pleased with mine. I hope you'll post some pics here in the thread after using it! Mine is now in the closet, waiting for Spring. I intend to use it shooting waders mostly. They're often just that bit too distant for my EF lenses (and I have to wait for a fly by or lucky encounter). So it'll be fun using the 800mm there. And it's definitely a better lens than the specs (f/11  ) would indicate. :-P

It would have been nice welcoming you into the D500PF club, Levina, but judging by your shots here, it's easy to see you made an excellent choice!

I’m following this thread but I don’t seem to get notifications for new posts! Second time I had that happen here.

Very nice! I find BIFs with 800mm very hard. The few I did manage were totally accidental.

I had not planned to get one, thinking I could get there with my present EF lenses + TC’s but I am actually considering getting one now.

Just received the 100 euro rebate from Canon on the 800/11. That took a while. :-P
Still waiting on the free EF>RF adapter from them...

Regardless, you appear to be getting some great usage out of the new kit! I look forward to hearing how the adapter works for you; I'm definitely considering making the line shift in '21 and moving over to the m/l system. I still need to go to my local shop and monkey with one a little bit, as I'm still not confident in switching to an EVF and dealing with the overly bright displays and poor refresh rates that give me headaches. I haven't had time to actually evaluate the EVFs on newer bodies and if they've advanced past that point, there's no good barrier for me.

Actually, that will be my second adapter. I bought one early on, in August I think when just one shop here had exactly that one basic adapter. I'm glad I did because they're still very hard to come by, "sold out" or "expected" everywhere. So the camera arrived some 5 weeks or so later and then it turned out I could "claim" a free adapter from Canon. Which I did, so I'll have two.

I only have the EF > RF basic adapter and it works very well. With my 300/4L or 400/5.6L, or any of my other lenses, there is no difference from using them bare on a DSLR. AF-speed is just as quick and responsive. If there is a difference, it's that focus is dead on in that there is no more front- or back-focusing. I had some problems with that with my 400mm but those problems are now over. I have always been bad at AFM-ing lenses and am glad that's a thing of the past now!

As to switching from a DSLR to mirrorless, that's a tough decision, Eric. I didn't see any other path for myself. I very much wanted a new gen sensor and as there is no 7DIII on the horizon, I decided to take the plunge with the R6. It's a different shooting experience and it's something to get used to, that's for sure!

Thanks; all good info. Yeah, the addition of some of the AF assist features, like eye AF and the "loss" of need for MFA are some of the major attractions for me. I'm holding off a little bit longer since there does appear to be, at least, rumblings of a 7D equivalent in the next 12-18mo; but, the feature set is nice one. And, the apparent outcomes of using the EF/RF adapter with older lenses makes it a much easier transition. When I make the switch, I will likely opt for the Breakthrough 3rd party adapter that they put out for their drop-in filter system :)

The good thing is that whatever you decide, you can't go wrong. There are no bad cameras these days, not in the segment of the market that you will be looking at anyway. There are so many options in fact that at least for me it was hard to see where to go for a great while. I am glad I waited though as it has paid off; I'm still with Canon and very happy with the new gear.

The new m/l 7D (that would be an R7 I think?) will be very interesting!

Amazing examples in here. Nothing about these images belies the optics bargain basement price (relative to a "normal" 10K lens!)
thanks for posting. Levina, the close focus info is really good to know.
Now that these lenses exist, I can;t imagine any reason for a bird enthusiast NOT to have at least one.
