Been really busy with a combination of 3rd quarter results and 2021 budget planning hell at work so apologies if I hadn't responded to any posts you guys directed at me in the past couple of weeks.
Regarding the a7c since a lot of people have questions about it......it's only been a couple of days but I've been shooting with it a bit and I really really love this camera. From a shooting experience perspective, I haven't enjoyed a camera this much since the original a7r and the rx1rII.
The EVF is noticeably small, but its not a big deal and you adjust to it pretty quickly. The big downside isn't necessarily the size of the EVF, but how deep the eye-cup is...you really need to push your eye into it to seal out ambient light. Not an issue for me even when I did some shooting outdoors yesterday afternoon, but could be an issue for people who wear glasses?
MF with the CV40 works fine.....I tend to rely on focus peaking and only magnify when focus peaking has trouble highlighting the focal plane...could be placebo effect, but it seems that focus peaking works a bit better on the a7c as I'm finding I don't need to magnify as often.
AF seems to be an improvement over the a7rIV....eye AF is even more sticky and live-tracking doesn't jump around as much. I did some tracking torture tests with the kids y'day and the hit rate when bursting is higher than the a7rIV, though TBH, the lower resolution means there is more headroom in the critical focus areas when you start to pixel peep.
The camera doesn't have a mechanical first curtain shutter, so there are downsides with that as we all know. This is a big reason I wouldn't rely on this as my main camera for paid work because of bokeh issues at fast shutter speeds and occasional flash sync issues.
Regarding controls....you give up a front control wheel, some custom buttons, and the joystick with the a7c. For those of us who shot with the a7rII and earlier cameras, we all know the work arounds and the muscle memory with using the control pad to select AF points kicks in again. The record button for video cam be mapped, but you do give up the ability to start shooting video outside of movie mode with a button. I haven't figured out an alternative way to shoot video in manual or AV mode with that button mapped to something else.
Last point...I posted this in FM, but now that I have this thing in hand, I really appreciate the thought process that went into the design of the camera....they really did everything they could to minimize the size of the body. The camera lacks a front control wheel, but when you actually hold the camera, you realize that the grip is only slightly larger than the Z battery...its basically a hollow space for the battery and nothing more. The topside "hump" is just tall enough to clear the lens mount, and the height of it is basically flush with the control wheels and hotshoe. The EVF is small because it fits within the "hump" without protruding. This really minimizes the height of the overall camera and makes it easier to pack into a bag or even a small pocket.
The EVF hump on the other a7 bodies seems immaterially large and it probably is for a lot of people, but when it comes to packability, the tallest point of the hump is basically the height of the entire camera. Depending on how you shoot and carry a camera, losing the hump can go a long way.
I.e. I just packed the a7c and two extra lenses I to the peak design sling 5L. A7riv takes up two slots in this bad so usually can I let pack 1 extra lens
