That is a really nice pic, Steve, nicely showing how well that 800/11 performs. And is that frost or just a hairy plant? I look out the window and all I see is wall-to-wall greyness. Such is november here...

The 800/11 is indeed terrific for songbirds. I have my back-button set-up with Eye-AF and Spot-AF on the AF-ON and Star button resp. and then I have Zone-AF on the DOF Preview button. With these tiny birds I start with Spot-AF and then switch to Eye-AF and that works very well.

My problem at times was actually finding the birds in the viewfinder, because of the narrow depth of field you have. I got lost a few times. I'm sure that would improve with more practice. It's just getting used to shooting with 800mm.

A more serious problem that I ran into is tree clutter. Because of the ability to shoot birds from further away, there's also more clutter in the way. Like so, with this Jay (I only did a quick edit here; it was not meant to go on display). I took one shot, moved an inch and he was gone - Jays are seriously skittish birds...

Quite a good shot!

(about the bold text above) The same happens when looking through a riflescope. In this case one has to open the left eye to find the subject, then close the left eye and switch to the right eye on the viewfinder. I still struggle with it :)

My local camera store, Kenmore Camera, is showing the R5, R5 Kit, R6, R6 L Kit, and R6 STM Kit as all being in stock.

And for anyone looking they do online orders www.kenmorecamera.com (external link) free shipping on orders over $29

Good store, local for me as well.

Couple of landscape photos taken with the R6 this morning in a field behind my house.

Dull foggy morning today which gave me an opportunity to shoot low light with the R6. It must not have been as dark as it seemed to me as the ISO needed was only 3200.

After many years, I am still surprised at what the actual EV levels can be compared to what it seems. What you have there is about 5% the light of "sunny f/16" or 4.33 stops lower.

I remember a few years ago being outside during a near solar eclipse, and the lack of clouds despite a very directional (but diminished) sun created a very weird feeling in me, like I had a sense that I never see this quality of light at this low of an intensity with my bare eyes (I would guess about 3 stops down from normal, for that crescent sun). Like very dark sunglasses, but without them (it is obvious that you're wearing them).

Another tree clutter shot (under a heavily gray sky), Eastern Towhee. Like Levina, I'm using Eye-AF and Spot-AF on the AF-ON and Star buttons, respectively (I need to look into Zone-AF on the DOF Preview button) . I've been very impressed by the usefulness of Spot-AF on the R6. Whether it was me or a characteristic of the camera, I never had much success with Spot-AF on my 7D ii.

Hmmm, I’m going to try that next time. It’s so strange. I can shoot comfortably with 600mm. Never thought that 200mm more would make such a big difference, but it does.

I used Spot Single Point- AF on the 1D4 and all my 1D bodies (not sure now if the 1DIIn had it) and it worked very well. And now it’s a great starting point for when Eye-AF struggles, like for birds in the thick of a tree etc. Once Spot-AF locks on, switching to Eye-AF keeps the focus and finds the eye. I never would have thought that my main AF method would one day become an assist mode! :-P

And clutter or not, your Towhee is a beautiful bird, Steve.

I'm in the same boat, it's great to have Spot-AF that works as I'd hoped it would.

Spot-AF on the 7Dii was very hit and miss. I think partly that was due to the size and location of the cross focus point versus the placement and size of the focus point in the viewfinder.

Would V60 rated SD cards suffice for R6 use? Can they maintain long bursts?
