Those comparisons tend to be set-up to favor the smartphones and mask their deficiencies though. I've been pretty bullish on smartphone photography, but am increasingly growing less so.

Big issue for me with smartphone portraits is that the bokeh modes...they rarely look natural and most often the masking of the subject is just off. They're probably good enough for most people, but I don't think they pass the critique of a photographer. Which is fine, but they keep pitching these phones as being capable of taking professional photos. Its...an overstatement for sure.

I've gone full tilt on a7c compact gear GAS.

Pulled cyber monday trigger on Sigma 45. Am almost certain I will preorder the Sigma 35 f2

I was keen on that lens too, the whole AFC thing put me off though. Keen to hear your thoughts in that regard when you get it.

Likewise. I almost pulled the trigger on this thing when it was like $300 adorama hot deal. Kinda regret it, but the af-c issue made me hesitate. Sounds like its a non issue if you don't shoot wide open near MFD? We'll see.

I've been shooting the signs 35 1.2 a lot for portrait season and am really happy with how it renders...its just an impractical size. It looks like the Sigma 45 renders similarly, and hopefully the 35 f2 does as well.

The SY 35 1.8 seems to render nicely too. I'm really happy with the look of the 75 1.8.

It is nice but can I see a little bigger size? Not an iPhone person but I work on Google Pixel phones and to me at least a 15 yr old 5dc still does a better job if you stick a 35L on it. It won't have the DR but one can easily take care of that by shooting properly exposed shots. If you looking for pocketable cameras, then yes current phones do a very good job.

I never compare it to a proper camera, i'm just sharing what it can do by itself. phones can never replace a DSLR or mirrorless.

An early Christmas present to me.

I used my Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.2 lens for this one.

Ive spent a good deal of time studying this photograph and have finally concluded I like the spirit better. The image of course is a very close second. Being a single malt man myself I'm a Jura fan through and through. And you guessed it Gene going to have get an image of that! All the very best for Christmas!

One from closer to my home. I tried a bit higher vantage point. Being short and handicapped doesn't help. If I shoot later for a better sky then the grape vines are all in shade and don't show any color. Most of them are all dried up at this time and soon will loose all the leaves. I did use a GND and a circular pol in this shot to get some blue in the sky.

Higher vantage points for vineyard shots are great. A couple of my all time favorite vineyard images were done on an 6 foot ladder. A friend who shoots professionally stands on top of his old beater car for some of his work. He's 6'3" and 250 pounds so you can imagine what the roof looks like. :-D

I watched a YouTube video the other day and they had an iPhone 12 max and a canon mirrorless (R5 or R6 I think) and it was a blind test, so same framing/photos and same post work. It was mainly portraits but honestly you couldn’t tell the difference. I’m sure if you pixel peep you could but for posting online and printing at normal sizes it was crazy how close they were.

Won’t be selling all my gear for an iPhone just yet though

Eddie, here is old 5dc shot. If iPhone 12 really shoots same as R5/R6, I will throw my Pixel 5 in the garbage can and get an iPhone.

Agree. But I must say the portrait mode is getting better and better. My experience is only on the Pixel though. It is funny I was teaching a studio photography class at work and complaining about the portrait mode of our phones and one of the guy in the class was the person who works on it. I felt bad. But again it is amazing to me what software can do with a tiny sensor.

Yeah I owned the 5Dc too, great look to the files. I’m not suggesting a phone can replace a camera setup, just stating that in the video I watched I couldn’t tell which was which in a blind test. And this was from a photographer YouTube channel I follow

I think that's the whole point.....it's a phone!

It is ironic that it's all about the camera in these smartphones, and maybe some 5G talk these days, but rarely anything about how good the actual phone is. I guess after texting and TicTok, using a smartphone to actually *talk* on it is not done.

Bought a new Pixel5 on a Black Friday/trade in deal and tried out the Night Sight last night under an almost full moon. It does okay if you can hold it still enough...and there are no bright lights to blow out. Overall not impressed - it certainly doesn't live up to the marketing hype.

I actually don’t know a single person with a pixel. I had to google there to make sure they are sold in the uk but it seems they are. Most people have either Samsung (Android) or iPhone here it seems. There’s the odd person I know with a huwawai , bought for the camera. I’m old school and still rocking an iPhone 6. Might get the 12 in 5 years or so :D

Beautiful shot! Hoping to get some shots of these guys next spring during the breeding season. Our local conservation area which I am a member of has a large number of Bluebird nesting boxes set out for them so hopefully they show up.

Most of the waterfowl have already migrated south but I was out yesterday and spotted two pairs of Hooded Merganzers, unfortunately didn't have the right equipment with me at the time:cry:

Thanks. I think these might be here for the winter...and I have one nest box already, and have another ready to put out.

You need this in your garage!

well, the closest I will ever get is the picture printed...$145K is a bit rich for my blood...so I just have to appreciate them when I shoot them and dream about them all night...

MedicineMan4040 wrote in post #19159442 (external link)
Perfect!
Mine are long gone in the city, and none at altitude.
No Mergansers either on the lake but Buffleheads have arrived...just think, we'll be in the single digits next week and that is balmy for a Bufflehead.

Thanks. I hope to get lucky on the mergansers this weekend...luck is rarely on my side...

forum: Sony Digital Cameras

A lot of phones bracket their images to get their DR. The night mode on some phones is them shooting multiple exposures in a short burst then blending the best parts of each image together in real time.

I use LR mobile from time to time to shoot DNG and I've found my XS Max struggles in anything even remotely low light. I went out to do cityscapes at dusk with my A7III and even though I was using HDR DNG mode, it was noise ridden and looked horrible on the iPhone. It's main advantages all come from computational processing within the camera so when you use these 3rd party apps that don't utilize these features it really shows it's weakness.

I would be curious to see what JPEG's on an actual ILC would be like if the same computational techniques could be built in the cameras firmware.
