A lot of phones bracket their images to get their DR. The night mode on some phones is them shooting multiple exposures in a short burst then blending the best parts of each image together in real time.

I use LR mobile from time to time to shoot DNG and I've found my XS Max struggles in anything even remotely low light. I went out to do cityscapes at dusk with my A7III and even though I was using HDR DNG mode, it was noise ridden and looked horrible on the iPhone. It's main advantages all come from computational processing within the camera so when you use these 3rd party apps that don't utilize these features it really shows it's weakness.

I would be curious to see what JPEG's on an actual ILC would be like if the same computational techniques could be built in the cameras firmware.

Yes the pro raw is basically taking an HDR, flattening the base exposure, but baking the captured tonal depth into a raw file. Its an interesting concept. I always feel that the default hdr on phones is way too strong, so itd be nice to quickly tweak the tones in the phone.

I actually don’t know a single person with a pixel. I had to google there to make sure they are sold in the uk but it seems they are. Most people have either Samsung (Android) or iPhone here it seems. There’s the odd person I know with a huwawai , bought for the camera. I’m old school and still rocking an iPhone 6. Might get the 12 in 5 years or so :D

Apple mkt, what else to say. Not saying that they don't make good phones. But to me, all these companies have people jump up/down for a phone. maybe work

Only reason I carry I pixel as it is free for me and need for my work. I won't spend $1000 on a phone. Now 3x on a camera or a lens, I have no problem as I know it will last much longer.

My work pays for mine, hence the iPhone 6 and not the 12 :)

Eddie, here is old 5dc shot. If iPhone 12 really shoots same as R5/R6, I will throw my Pixel 5 in the garbage can and get an iPhone.

Even if phones could somehow miraculously match the output of a standalone camera, I probably would still want a standalone camera...one that is compact as possible of course. Reason being that smartphones have proven to be general purpose devices that do so many things at one that they can actually be a hassle to use. I.e. often getting my phone out and launching the phone app is more effort than picking up a camera which is always ready to shoot.

My phone can also control my TV, turn on a lot of lights, unlock my doors, open my garage, turn on my sprinklers etc. And yet I never use my phone to do these things. Even though they are smart devices, I rely on standalone remotes, voice control, automation, or other ways of interacting that don't involve grabbing my phone and opening an app.

I also have been doing a lot of cloud based gaming on my phone...and I kind of want a standalone cloud gaming device. Phone calls, texts, and notifications ruin the experience.

What I'm realizing is that I don't need a good camera in this device that I incorporate on myself everyday. I just need a standalone camera that is easier to integrate into my everyday life. Smaller camera with better connectivity options and in camera post processing capabilities is what id be into.

Zx1? Lol

Same here and I work on some of this hardware we make. I don't want computer control of things connected to the internet and with all this big companies knowing everything. If you think we had all these embedded systems in all sorts of machinery, appliances for so long but they were all without connection to the internet and they were designed with more thought for long term operation. Now a days it doesn't happen.

Thank you very much Vinz.

I hope this isn't too far off topic since no Sony image here. ;-)a but I thought I'd share this:

As you may know, Thanksgiving Day celebrates the 400 year anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower to America.

In researching my family history, I discovered a biography of my great grandfather F.H. Lewis that was published in 1899. In that biography was the following lines that mention a direct connection to John Alden, the Cooper who came to America aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

"On the 27th of December, 1871, in Marion Township, Mr. Lewis was united in marriage with Miss Lucy A. Johnson, a daughter of Rev. G. S. Johnson, who served as postmaster of Stillman Valley continuously for about a quarter of a century. He was a native of Massachusetts, an early settler of Illinois, and was a direct descendant of John Alden, who came to America on the Mayflower."

Based on this, I've tried to see if I could make the connection to John Alden (1599-1687) at ancestry.com and believe I have been successful in making that connection. Recently, I got a hint tied to another ancestor of John Alden who has a DNA match to me going back 5 generations to John Alden's great-grandson, also named John Alden (1718-1821). This evidence helps confirm my family connection to both John Alden and his wife Priscilla Mullins. They would be my 8th great grandparents.

Thanks It's been fun...and frustrating at times but that just makes new discoveries that much more rewarding. There have been many times I've run into a dead-end only to find another angle to approach the problem later when I least expect it and it's off to the races again. When I first started, I had no idea my family's histories would be so rich or that I would find so many details.

Sometimes I feel a bit like Sherlock Holmes...or is it Philip Marlow or perhaps Samuel Spade. ;-)a

All that tech scares me! Did you ever see any of the most recently imagined 'Battlestar Galactica' ? The one with the least tech survived.

Thanks! The rest of the shoot was pretty drab as it was overcast so I leaned on my strobe a lot. But the sky opened up right when the burn started.

I watched a YouTube video the other day and they had an iPhone 12 max and a canon mirrorless (R5 or R6 I think) and it was a blind test, so same framing/photos and same post work. It was mainly portraits but honestly you couldn’t tell the difference. I’m sure if you pixel peep you could but for posting online and printing at normal sizes it was crazy how close they were.

Won’t be selling all my gear for an iPhone just yet though

The late model phones are getting better digital stabilization, like the Gopros, iq is often fudged for promo videos, similar to the GoPro promo videos, but less over the top.

Like the GoPro, any hints of dim lighting, it struggles. The latest phones are great, and I use it all the time, but not even close to replacement of big sensor ILC imo.

A cousin of mine was explaining how well his pro Max was for photos.... just bought into the Fuji system :-P

I do use my iPhone a ton for photo and video, but when I’m aiming to produce a quality video or photo, camera all the way.
