Recently up in AK for a visit to Denali and the surrounding region; there was a massive explosion of Snowshoes EVERYWHERE; we were seeing roughly 20-30 per mile along the side of the Denali Hwy and way more than that on the back, gravel roads. Interestingly, they've become noted for geophagous behaviors that researchers haven't quite figured out yet; they come out to the shoulders, driveways, paths, etc and actually 'eat' the gravel. We thought they were grazing on verge grasses and such at first but were able to find them in many, naked gravel patches which prompted a closer look:

This one was in the driveway of the place we were staying and wasn't gonna give up its little patch of gravel heaven for love, money nor dynamite. Pretty much at MFD for the 100-400 and it wouldn't *budge*; we had to carefully drive around it to pull in to our spot.

Nice images. The back feet look large, which I suppose gives them their name.

Exactly right! Lets them keep on top of the snow (when it's the season) and still be able to move when the Lynx find 'em :D

Thank you for clarifying what family Pikas are in. I saw my first one a couple weeks ago, now I am obsessed with getting a great photo of one. I now know where to post it. :-)

That's great that you're getting interested in Pikas! . They're one of my favorite subjects t photograph, and I've spend many days with them in their high altitude habitats, which is always a great time, whether any good photos can be had or not.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
