Hi , I just purchased a 7d mark ii to shoot my kid's sports, I'm fairly new at photography but have some experience. The focus system is fantastic. I took pictures at my son's roller hockey game under poor lighting conditions. I noticed even at ISO 3200 the pictures are noisy when viewed at 100% . In retrospect should I have shot at lower speed? Maybe shoot at 500 to lower the ISO. Appreciate any advice.

The first picture was taken with my 24-70mm lens and the next ones with my 70-200. I did notice that the 70-200 look better at higher ISO. Is there anything I can do to reduce noise in poor lighting conditions and get sharper images?

Ok, stop zooming to check for noise. I've printed ISO12800 at 30x20in and they look great, and delivered ISO16000 shots to clients. If you underexpose a shot and try and correct, you'll add more noise into the image.

If you're missing focus, look at micro adjusting your lenses?

You're new to the camera, it will take time to get used to it's nuances

TBH SS 1/1000 or even 1/1250 at ISO3200 is oodles of light!

I'm used to 1/200 or lower at ISO3200

What speed are you shooting at? I shoot concert photos with a 7dMKII and a Tamron 2.8 70-200mm lens at 125. They come out fine. Try shooting at lower shutter speeds and see how low you can go so there is no blur. That will lower the ISO and noise. You should also try the trial version of Denoise. You will be surprised at how well it will remove noise. I use it all the time.

Quit pixel peeping. Viewing at 100 percent is a recipe for dissatisfaction and for no reason. Better to keep your shutter speeds up and get crisp shots. Even if you get some noise you are shooting in circumstances where it's nearly impossible to be noise free with the current generation of gear.(just a few years ago your results would have been unusable in that light).

Recently acquired a 7D Mk2 as a replacement for my 7D that took a drop in a river...
Absolutely amazed that anything could be salvageable at an ISO of 16000!

We have people complaining about the 7D2 performance at 1600 ISO and here you are, excited about how well it does at 16000 ISO.

Helps to be using prime glass with zero crop, even as old as the Canon 400mm f/5.6 is!

I've some shots I feel are decent above 16000 in this thread, and one shot I'm amazed I got at all.

For me, I am pretty happy with most shots from the 7DII, even up to ISO 3200 or 6400. In most cases. But I do see threads were folks complain that the 7DII can not produce any decent shot over ISO of 800...

I see those, too. They claim the 7D2 is a "light-hog". This isn't too bad at ISO 12800
