Lovely. One has to wonder about the amount of work those wartime pilots had to do with all those levers and switches. Many more would have made it home if they had a Garmin GPSmap (496?) as this one. ;-)a:-)

I recently posted a very similar picture to this of the P51 Mustang of the Hangar 11 Collection against a very grey sky. Today I came across this one while going back over pictures from earlier this year with the sky looking a lot more inviting!

Thank you. Yes, definitely seat-of-the-pants flying back then.

Looks like a couple of Garmin 430, possibly 530s! in there as well! I sometimes think that it’s a shame to fit modern instruments and avionics to these beautiful old warbirds.

I would think that the drivers felt very exposed in either of those seats!

Looking at the instrument panel I think that the flight eng must have had the engine instruments because I can't see them in front of the drivers?

My ambition for a good while is to grow old disgracefully. So far my wife tells me that I am doing really well!

They were called Fortress I believe and some bristled with guns all around fighters probably had a bad day coming up on those.

Very true 4M but a fighter is a lot smaller target than a Fortress init

Canadian-designed and built De Havilland Beaver bush plane approaching our camp on Turtle River, north of Rainy Lake, in 1961 when I worked the summer timber cruising. This plane took the eight of us and our gear there (two or three trips), including our canoes strapped on top of the floats, and brought us our supplies and flew us to Fort Frances for our breaks. A sturdy little plane that inspired confidence.

Leica III 35 mm, digitized from slide.
