Critters are looking much improved. Great editing. Just ONE MORE DAY to post your Duck Saves.

I thought the swans ought to be looking at each other. In PS made selections of both using rectangular marquee tool, swapped positions, cleaned up the edges, Topaz deNoise AI, cropped, LAB colour boost and sharpen

DXO Photolab 4: Lens corrections and NR then removed extraneous birds added vibrancy.

This one IMO is the best photo of the bunch. DXO Photolab 4: Lens corrections and NR then brightened highlights and shados slightly, cropped.

Duck Rescue Complete

Sorry for being so slow with this today - a very busy one. I think doing virtual stuff takes longer than in-person used to.

As usual in this thread a very tough decision, choosing just one. But since I must, this session goes to rrblint / Mark, not for one particular editing job but for the collective submissions. Admit, though, that I also particularly like that last "plump, happy couple" as Peano called them.

Stiga, Bianchi, Mozes, NigelD, Peano, HKGuns are all entitled to bows.

I think altogether the ducks (and the swans) were more than rescued. Several of them were - as the old-time Methodists would say - positively "translated unto Glory".

Thanks to all. Learned lots again this week.

Take it away Mark.

That was a good one Rob, many thanks for all the uploads.

Sorry that I did not have time for more but I have been very busy setting up a new laptop for my other half. It took a while to remover all the crapware and then install all the bits and bobs for her.

Seasonal greeting to all on this very instructive sub-forum.

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Once again I haven't shot anything since COVID so here's another portrait ca. 2005, EOS 3, Kodak VPS 160.

HERE (external link) is the DNG file.

SOOC Sort of:

Hey Mark,

I couldn't open this in PhotoLab 4. It indicated it's an unsupported raw format. Can you open it in your copy of PhotoLab?

Please don't count this as a submission as I used Portrait Pro for part of my edit.

The first thing I did was white balance correction in ACR, then adjusted the white/black points, and adjusted shadows and highlights.

Back in PS CC 2021, I removed dust and scratches as well as the hot spot on her nose, then used Nik's Dfine 2 noise reduction. I then used Portrait Pro plugin to add mascara, eye shadow, eye liner, and a little blusher. I tried to preserve her freckles as much as possible. I also selected the iris of both eyes, copied them on a separate layer, and changed the blend mode to 'Screen'.

Crop and resize for posting.
