70-200 f/4L IS USM. Great lens, maybe the best I’ve ever owned. Needed more reach so I sold it to fund a Sigma 100-400 | C with no regrets.

Canon EOS R7, M5, 100 (film), and Sony α6400
I have an orange cat and a brown cat. In HSL, they're both orange.

70-200 F4L - relatively inexpensive, light, fast and sharp! Huge upgrade from my 100-300 Canon.
Once kids started playing volleyball I needed a 2.8 and upgraded to the 70-200 2.8L II. Huge difference in speed, sharpness and bokeh IMO.
But you never forget your first! ;)

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

When I was big into Canon pro cameras back in the 80s (F-1n, New F-1, T-90) any "L" lens was way out of reach for me. My wish was to eventually buy a 300mm f/.8L someday. Later, before transitioning to digital, I did buy a used 300mm f/2.8L and was not impressed. It was very heavy and awkward to handle, plus it was not anywhere near as good as the ad made it out to be. So I returned it.

After going digital, my first "L" lens that I was able to acquire was the 7-200 f/2.8 L Mark II to go with my new 80D. I got it from a photographer who was going Sony mirrorless and it was in mint condition, indistinguishable from new at about half of MSRP. This is an amazing lens and the pride of my collection. I have added a 100mm f/2.8L macro lens and I'm just starting to learn how best use this lens.

My first L lens was an EF 24-105mm f4L IS lens. Still have it, and still takes great pics. I also have the EF 70-200mm f4L, and the EF 100-400mm f4-5.6L lens. Looking to get the EF 16-34mm L lens to complete the set.

Nice pull, not only did you surface a thread whose last entry was 2014, the user who started the thread is now banned! :) That is a double score in my book.

First L was a 100-400L, v1. I preordered a Canon D60 from one dealer, and ordered the 100-400, a Canon 50/1.8 II, and a Sigma 14mm from another vendor. I had the 100-400 for a week with no DSLR to mount it on! But it was a great purchase, I used it for fourteen years before upgrading to v2.

70-200 f/2.8 no-IS, ex-press lens, cosmetically quite beat up but very sharp, it did the rounds with several local members here. Got it back in 2005, replaced a 75-300IS (the original IS lens I think) that I had since 2000 that I got with my EOS30 film body.

It had flames on the hood!!!

My first L lens was (and still is) the 200mm f2.8L USM (gen 1). It was phenomenal for astrophotography.

Then I dropped it.

But then I got it repaired.

It took me over 15 years to get my first L lens. I purchased a 20D when it first came out, early 2000s I think. I bought a 17-40 f4L for my commercial brokerage business about a year ago. I just picked up my second, 24-105 f4L, which I will use as my everyday carry lens.

I just sold my third L lens and the last one I owned (so far), a 70-300L.

I got it about 3-4 years ago when I was doing a lot of traveling and I wanted something more compact than the Sigma 100-400. It was a great lens and I used it a few times, but later that year I bought an M5 + EF-M 18-150 kit and that became my travel rig. Since then, the M5 has been my small/light setup, and I've used the 100-400 when I needed more reach, so the 70-300L wasn't getting out much.

The guy who bought it from me had responded to my Craigslist ads several times and made a few offers. I eventually let it go for a bit less than I had hoped but that's OK. He seemed like a good guy who would really appreciate the lens and use it a lot more than I ever did. So it's his now.

This thread is like interviewing drug addicts, how did you get your first high? Alright, it all started with the 50L then the 100LISMacro and spiraled out of control shortly afterward with a 35L, 70-200/2.8L and 85L. I knew that I was in deep when I sold the 35L and replaced it with a 24LII and the same with the 85LII, 85/1.4LIS, 16-35/4LIS, 70-200/2.8LIS and even owned a couple 200/2.8L's because I loved them but didn't use them very often. Can I earn a chip on this thread if I haven't acquired an L in the past year?
