Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Here is an image I captured at the Grounds for Sculpture museum in New Jersey a year or two ago. NOTE: When viewing the image in DropBox the colors are much darker than they are in the raw file itself. I'm guessing that is a limitation of DropBox's image viewer. The raw file should look like the image below when it is downloaded. The image below is an export from the unedited raw file.

HERE (external link) is the .cr2 file on DropBox.

Thanks. Sorry about that. I don't use DropBox that often. I created a different shared link. Please try the original link again and let me know if it still fails.

Lovely image to work on

1. DxO PL4 export as DNG
2. SNS-HDR
3. Photoshop/ACR > minor tweaks > resize > Topaz Sharpen AI

Thanks. I have created a number of very different versions of this image over time. I like working on it because there is a lot of detail, color, texture, shape, light and shadow, etc. to experiment on. I believe there are lots of opportunities to try different editing approaches which is why I selected it for this contest.

Exactly. The details of color and texture are what attracted me to this beautiful image. I obviously replaced the sky and removed most of the people. The rest is just selective attention to details.

Nice job. You might consider removing the reflection of the person in white too.

Here's my attempt.

Open in ACR for basic adjustments. Set white/black points, adjust shadows/highlights to taste, level and boost vibrance. Back in PS 2021, remove people and apply Topaz Simplify to knock down highlights and further boost colors. Reduce image size, Apply Topaz Sharpen AI, and save.

Oh, I also removed the white object next to the stone structure on the left.

God of you to say so. It was a rapid job using my "normal" workflow but hope to have another stab at it before the week is over :-)

The "white object" is actually a sculpture. Here it is from a different angle. See the first picture below which shows it in shadow. This is, after all, Grounds for Sculpture. :-)

There are hundreds of sculptures, big and small, funny and serious throughout the park. Many are based on famous paintings. The second image of the bridge and lillies is an attempt to recreate the look of the famous Japanese bridge painting by Claude Monet. It often difficult to get a good image of it without someone crossing it just as you push the shutter button. I was lucky with this one. Several other attempts were not so lucky. If any of you are in New Jersey after the pandemic I highly recommend Grounds for Sculpture. It is a beautiful private park/museum filled with many great things to shoot. While there are some buildings to explore most of the collection is outside.

Ah, thanks very much for clarifying what the object is. It sounds like an interesting place to explore.

Here is another one from Grounds for Sculpture.. This whimsical sculpture is based on Renoir's well known painting "Luncheon of the Boating Party" The artist who created this sculpture, is also the designer and founder of Grounds for Sculpture, Seward Johnson, a member of the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals family which is also based in New Jersey.
