It's across the street from where I rented a room for many winters in Cuba. In a warm country streets become nice places to socialize after traffic dies down. Here's another shot from the same street.

I just can’t get over how steep those stairs are!

I would hate to have to climb those multiple times a day.

That's not the end of it. Building space in urban areas tends to be tight, so many Cubans build their houses on top of the flat concrete roofs of, say, their parents' house. And to maximize their living space, they minimize the size of their stairwell. And for that, nothing beats the spiral stair. Cubans are good at making the most of whatever they do have, even if they have to compromise things that we wouldn't.

It looks like the stairs at the bottom are starting IN the bush on the ground. I would have thought they would have the turned the stairway in the opposite direction for the stairs to be 180 degrees in the opposite direction on the ground.

No, the stairs keep going down to end in the space in front of the door of the house below, at the level where the bush, too, starts.
