My father's photo from Jyväskylä, Finland, probably in 1944. During the war almost all of our gasoline supply was needed by the armed forces, so civilian traffic needed to find an alternative, and this was carbon monoxide produced by burning wood or charcoal in stoves attached to the exterior of the vehicle. For this we had all the fuel we wanted, but it gave much less power than gasoline, so going up big hills could be a problem. Also it was cumbersome, as you had to get the fire burning before you could get moving, and on longer trips you had to stop from time to time to add fuel to the stove or to clean the filters that kept soot from getting into the engine.

This girl was running away from the seagulls in panic. I wasn’t expecting it so she is not in focus, I think it works anyway.
