On Auckland's waterfront sits a significant artwork. For information on the work see:

The lights inside, reflecting on the highly polished surface of the figure of Capt. James Cook, create a degree of chaos and disorientation - a commentary on his exploratory visits that paved the way for colonization and impacted the indigenous Maori population. His figure stares pensively at a fireplace as if contemplating his impact on a later multi-cultural NZ society. The lights are centred on the Pleiades star cluster (the Little Dipper), which has a significance in Maori culture as its appearance at the end of June marks the start of the Maori new year. The fact that both Maori and European voyagers used this constellation for navigation provides a connection within the context of the artwork.

The use of a 1950's state house shell expresses a couple of things: the fact that so many Maori were disadvantaged and needed such buildings as homes, combines with the incongruity of a small domestic building occupying highly valuable land in the heart of Auckland's super expensive waterfront, expresses contradictions between Maori communal occupation and the European ownership pressures for land to live in and to conduct commerce.
