Assuming you're using a Canon body?

The Tamron is F2.8 and the Canon is F4.

Do you need F2.8? Or do you need 105mm end more?

What's your use?

Very best,

Yes. Having had a 24-70 for my portraits, I discovered I needed that extra 30mm more. I wound up hauling my 70-200 around just to get them, then decided that was dumb and got the 24-100. I haven't missed the aperture.

You’re right, my bad.

I’m using a 6D mk ii, mostly outdoor portraits

Outdoor portrait?

Unless you're doing wide field environmental stuff, do you really want that 24mm end?

Seems like a 70-200 F2.8 would be more suited to outdoor portrait if you want a zoom. Otherwise, I would suggest exploring something like the 85mm F1.8 or F1.4.

But if you are interested in wide field portrait that is environmental (such as including the environment, in focus, with the portrait) or if your outdoor spaces are super limited and require very close proximity to subject (and you're ok with the distortion of features from proximity) then a wide zoom makes sense.

Very best,

70-200 definitely sounds like a good choice for outdoor portraiture, but between the 2 lenses, I would probably pick the G2. I'm pretty sure the IQ is higher on the tamron. But you dont get the lens correction on the tamron like you do on the canon, so you have to fix vignetting and distortion in post.

If you find yourself going the G2 route, lmk im actually selling mine haha
