Putting the new AF through its paces with the 100 2.8L. Can’t believe how well it works...nearly every shot in this series was in focus with the dog flying toward the camera after his ball.

FYI - he’s not a vicious dog at all...just opens wide when he’s going top speed. My guess is to optimize air intake...canine supercharger.

Folks, I simply have no words. Oh. My. God! Why did I wait so long to buy one of these two cameras?!?! Should I throw my R against a concrete wall or just sell it?

I know I'm not even in class with most of you guys, but this camera has already changed my photography. And I pulled it out of the box and basically went straight to the show. Wow. I have no words. These are SOC JPGs. WOW.

Thank you. I thought the R was good, but eye autofocus on this camera is like cheating. #Insane

Doesn't the R have eye AF from a firmware update added later?

Yeah. But it's not even in class with the R6 when it comes to speed and acquisition. This thing locks on like a bulldog. It's amazing. And the lighting in this theater sucks. This is worst case scenario for any of you that do stage work. I've never been able to capture shots like this on this stage. It's the local Arts Council's theater and it's an old restored Vaudeville theater that seats about 600 and while it's beautiful, we are like every other small local Arts Council in the country. Budget is limited and we do the best we can with what we have.

By the way, this was from our Act for Youth's production of "Turn the Page" performed to a limited audience this past Friday night. I have over 300 SOC posted on Smugmug. They were so good I didn't even delete any of them. I posted them all so the parents could take what they wanted. Of course some are better than others, but none of them are an embarrassment to me as a photographer, and that alone speaks volumes.

If you want a hint of what this thing can do in a theater, take a look here. https://beamanfamily.smugmug.com/AFY-Turn-the-Page/n-kZpcnw (external link)

Have you considered shooting gloves ? These normally have fold back index finger and thumb, which are held back by magnets so may be of interest. I bought a pair by Deerhunter in the UK off ebay for about £10. Deerhunter are a Danish brand so may be more readily available to you in the Netherlands ?

Thanks. I'm really amazed. I just deleted the RAWs w/o even looking at them. For what I do, I didn't even need them. They wouldn't be worth the trouble to try to make them better for my audience. They'd never know the difference. If I can get 6-8 meg JPGs out of this camera and they are this good, I just can't see where I'd gain anything with the R5. I can't wait to see if I can tell any difference with the HEIFs. I haven't even played with that yet.

Oh I'm sure I'll upgrade to an R5 before it's all over, but the worry about going from the 30 meg R to the 20 meg R6 has vanished. Completely. There's simply no comparison. This sensor is better at 20 than the R is at 30, and the R, for all its faults, is no slouch either, especially when it comes to the quality of images from the sensor.

If anybody is standing on the fence like I have been for months, it's time to jump over. The water's not just fine. It's WAY better over here.

My sentiments Exactly! I was on the fence and could not believe the upgrades over my previous 5D3!! Why did I wait so long?? LOL.

I still detest the 30 minute video limit with a passion. I guess I have my Sonys for that still, especially when doing venue type stuff where 30 minutes just doesn't cut it (Like the musical above, for example, which I filmed with my a6600). I also hate the full Auto or Full Manual only options for video, but I'm betting on the come that will be addressed in an upcoming FW update, and if it isn't, I can live with it. But for a stills camera, if the R5 is a magnitude leap over this one, it's a leap over my head. My Mk III and R are going to be gathering dust. They need to jump in a box for UPS.
