During these troubled Corona times my neighbourhood consists of birds mostly. More specifically gulls. Been shooting them for months now. Mostly in flight. But not this one. He suddenly landed next to me on the ridge that runs around the building I live in. He was only just outside the MFD of the lens. And he fully saw me, but even as I swung out the window and pointed the lens at him, he stayed right where he was. He just seemed curious...

Good one Levina. Sure he was curious. He probably hadn’t seen a R6 before.:-)

Of course he's curious! He lives outdoors. He hasn't seen a human being in a year.

Free boxes

Some of you up there have such beautiful neighborhoods. I didn't try for beauty this time. Instead, I took shots illustrating the custom of putting unwanted but usable things out in front of one's home, free for the picking.

That dog at the left–evidently I pushed the button during a rare, brief interval between barks.

PRONOUN ADVISORY: OhLook is a she. | A FEW CORRECT SPELLINGS: lens, aperture, amateur, hobbyist, per se, raccoon, whoa | Comments welcome

Or looking for a handout.

You would think that, wouldn't you, but no, that's not what gulls do. When there is food detected, they come rushing in. But they won't come, anticipating a handout. Gulls don't beg. And without food to attract them, they are pretty cautious with people. In 12 years shooting birds and looking at these gulls, this is the first time I have ever seen one do this. Pigeons do it. Even swans. But not gulls.

LOL. That is as good an explanation as any, Terry!

Well, you know, he had seen me as I've been shooting him and his kind from my bedroom most every day since I got the R6 in, when was it, September, October? The Coronavirus kept me indoors so with a new camera, what do you do? Shoot whatever flies by...

And that is a really nice custom, OhLook: putting things that are no longer needed, but still good to use, outside like that.

The city put a putting green in a little park near me a few years ago.
It seems to get a lot of use from families. The coffee shop in the red
building keeps putters and balls for folks to use.

This little scene is in a roundabout just beside the building here.

That happens in our neighborhood also. A lot of people have fruit trees and put fruits out in boxes.. also other usable, not needed items.

I bet! Those are hard to come by. Some that are still around are prettier, with color prints of fruit/veg paintings.

A few here put out fruit, usually lemons, maybe limes. (Less sun and heat at this latitude.) I once snagged a kiwi fruit a few blocks from home.

Yesterday I went for a walk in the NZ bush, which is very thick and, in my area, still dominated by the few survivors of the huge Kauri trees (tallest 51m high, 15m girth) that once proliferated but were harvested en masse for their fantastic wood. Only a few remain in reserve areas and those are being threatened by a disease called Kauri Dieback, a sort of rot that gets into their roots and is easily spread by the feet of animals, obviously including us. There is a reserve nearby that has special shoe cleaning areas to sanitize them so we can still walk the paths to enjoy these wonderful trees.

I took my oldest camera with me ('cos I'm weird like that) just to see if it would still produce some decent photos. This was the venerable Canon PowerShot G1, circa 2000, boasting a massive 3MP! The images I shot are of the bark of the Kauri, showing how the light creates wonderful colourful sculptures from the bark's texture.
