Sony RX10 mk IV share your thoughts, interest, images.

We went down to La Jolla Cove (San Diego) this weekend to watch the seals (and pelicans and seagulls).

Another Harbor Seal puppy. I simply love the versatility of this camera.

Hi, we’ll I’ve had my RX10 iv for a few weeks now and am enjoying the focusing abilities and sharp lens.
Enjoyed a warm day at the New Hampshire coast last week photographing the local seagulls.

Third week with my new Sony RX10 iv..... I tried photographing the moon two nights ago. I’m certainly pleased ! Tripod mounted , I used DMF focus that enlarged the moon while turning the focus ring. Also bracketed the exposure five 1/3 stops and picked the one I liked the best.

HI....new member here and for past few yrs have been using my DSC-400HX and love the zoom. I just purchased the RX10mkIV and set it up according to online guides. I have a great eye for capturing photos, but grasping the “know how and actual operation” is confusing. I’m by no means a rank beginner but this is a complex camera to set up and I find when taking still shots that without cropping (which I never do) my HSC400 got closer to the subjects.

Can anyone refer me to some basic set up suggestions for still landscapes (birds, wildlife, architecture) and for moving birds and animals?? I’m perfectly fine with operating in the auto modes as I did with my last camera, and get lost in the technical aspect of photography so not looking at becoming a pro, just wanting the easiest settings to get some good hobby pictures.

Welcome to the tribe. After a year-and-a-half, I'm still learning the ins and outs of this camera...
Your old camera has a 50 times zoom and zooms in to 1200 mm eq. and the RX10iv zooms in to 600 mm eq. Yes, your giving up zoom range on the tele-end but you gain a lot of image quality (I assume, as I never shot with the 400-HX)

It is going to take a while to learn how to work the RX10 IV. Below is a table that I use as a guide to doing birds either static or flying. Maybe it will help you. You will probably need to consult the manual or online sources to understand some of it. Some of it might not apply to you. There are also plenty of websites around that have suggestions for different photographic genres.

And by the way, I crop every picture I take.

Yes, I see that and I’l keep the other camera as a spare and keep it in my Harley for those must have shots while out riding.

Hi , I find exposure bracketing ( in your drive mode ) good to use for any subject or landscape that is not moving. I do 5 exposures 1/3rd stop difference. Having that option is wonderful for the sky and clouds For keepers ,I’d say 70% are the 0 middle exposure and the remaining 30% are picked according to my preference, a bit darker ( moodier ) or a bit brighter ( such as flowers against a blue sky ). I feel doing this assists in any post processing and in many cases eliminates the need for post processing . I have the C2 button assigned to self timer with exposure bracketing. I’ve had the RX10 iv for about 3 weeks but also use this method with all my other Sony cameras.

Ending my third week with my new Sony RX10iv. Today I tried photographing New England swallows. These birds fly very fast skimming the surface of the water. The camera nailed the focusing.
