Can't let the day end without posting something with my new Sigma 105mm 2.8 Art Macro.

I like my woodworking tools like I like my lenses: brilliantly designed by German engineers. This is my Festool Kapex compound sliding miter saw on its stand. I've had it, along with several other super cool Festools for a few years before I started (seriously) doing photography in 2010. Now that I'm retired and we've moved into our retirement fixer-upper home I'm so glad I never sold or got rid of these awesome tools. Sadly I did sell off my bigger/heavier tools when I moved away from KC, so I now have to repurchase a jointer, planer, router table, and table saw.

Very nice saw. I no longer work wood but the best thing I ever did was get rid of my 80s purchased radial arm saw and replace it with a sliding compound miter saw.

Today I got a new macro lens (Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Art) and I want to start doing some macro shooting. I have two ideas: 1. floral images and 2. woodland stuff (mushrooms, fungi, moss, lichen, etc.). To make flowers really look great I need a flash. And for woodland stuff, where light levels are darker, I’m thinking LED light panel/light cube.

So, what flash would you suggest? I’d prefer a smaller one.

And the LED source? I’m thinking Litra Torch 2 looks nice.

I have a lens ring LED cheapo Neewer type it works good but I have been looking at arm extensions with two small godex flashes. HOWEVER

Thanks much for your thoughts Eddie..once seeing your post I immediately made an attempt to cancel my order...if the cancellation goes through I’ll order either the Godox V350S or the Nissan.

UPDATE: Amazon has confirmed the cancellation. Disaster averted!

I have both the Nissin i40 and the Godox V350.

The Nissin i40 is actually a lot more powerful than the size and stats suggest. The nissin takes 4 AA's....the Godox 2...so you can see the difference in power on tap. Not sure if it matters a whole lot if you're shooting macro up close, but the nissin could handle some bounce flash action and cycle relatively quickly. The godox runs out of juice pretty quickly.

Looking forward to seeing your macro work david!

Does the i40 work with Nissin's Air Commander controller? I believe it only works on the hot shoe of the camera. That's why I bought the i60 but that was some time ago. Hopefully, the i40 does now too.

i40 cannot. It's probably worth springing a bit more for the i60 just for extra power...it doesnt look like the i60 is much larger.

i40 can be had for pretty cheap used though. I actually broke the hot-shoe on mine. more an issue with the plastic sony hot-shoe than the flash itself. I keep breaking the hotshoes on my godox flashes, but you can buy replacements hot-shoe aseemblies.

Thanks for the confirmation Carlo. It's important that flash for macro be able to work off-camera so that the longer macro lenses don't block the light. I think David needs at least the Nissin i60 or its equivalent. The other solution is a wired connection between an off-camera flash and the camera.

That makes sense because these smaller flashes are short enough that they can get shaded by a long lens

Hi all, happy to share this one! I took the same shot a couple of weeks ago, but came back when there was more blossom on the tree. Our kids have just gone back to school, weather has been kinder recently, spring flowers arriving, so things are looking a bit better here

Heya folks - I cannot seem to get into a good rhythm with my new Sony (at least I still consider it new, haha)...

Here’s the same pile o rocks in Utah from two different perspectives - one sunrise and one sunset. Just kind of giving my eye some practice. (Feedback of all kinds v welcome!)

Sunsets (at least IMO) usually look better 15-20 minutes after the sun is under the horizon. The top shot looks very nice.

Saw some nice light on top of a hill today. It was good to get out today.

I agree that the top photo is really nice, but gets a little lost with all that empty sky. I'd suggest cropping off the top third of the image, the cropped pano type result really draws you into the picture, in my opinion!
