I had set my local camera group the exercise of OBSERVATION: to go out and, using a camera on auto, at a normal FoV, to just ACTIVELY OBSERVE their surroundings and take images without getting stressed about settings. It is an excellent exercise and a liberating experience.

I saw that the morning dew had left a wonderful textural pattern on the handle of a watering can, and that the straightness and brightness of the can contrasted well with the dim body of the can and the circular blackness of the filler aperture. This would have worked well being perfectly symmetrical, but I am ok with the slightly off centre location, I was just trying to get the handle vertical on the image!

This one is of the textures of the dew on my outdoor table, the metal frame and the decking beneath.

We went to this French patisserie in Victoria's China Town and I was taken with this elegant table arrangement.

Thank you. I have been practicing more and more still life during the pandemic.

For a spell I was practicing more though as the pandemic wore on, I became less and less motivated. Now the camera is lucky to hit 30 frames/month. :-( I miss it.

On a recent trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, I came across a section dedicated to Japanese porcelain, this one particularly struck my fancy. It is a set of acutely detailed, precisely fitted, covered nesting bowls made by Akari Yabi in 1955. They were first fired at high temperatures in a bed of silica sand, and then the glaze layer added later in a later firing, once the porcelain had matured. They are absolutely exquisite.
Available light, hand-held.

Still life is great for practicing lighting setups. I use mainly just one strobe with the occasional speed light thrown in for fill or highlights. I also started to use LED lights this year for the first time. It is tough to keep finding different compositions, but the alternative of putting the camera away for months at a time is not an option.
