Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

I have gone back to 2013 for the images this week. The shots were taken in hazy sunshine, perfect for portraits but not for landscapes IMO. You will have to deal with a paucity of pixels, and indifferent resolution at infinity. (The lens design on Canon Powershots gives it's best resolution at a distance of 2-200m). So show me how to get the best out of these 2 images sets taken at Drummond Castle just 10 miles from where I live. The castle comprises a tower house built in the late 15th century, and a 17th-century mansion, both of which were rebuilt in Victorian times. The famous gardens were established in the 1630s.

P.S. Maybe someone will demonstrate how Adobe's new Super Resolution with deal with10Mpix images. I suspect that, as Kirk says in another thread, "You will just get a larger, smeary version of your original" if the original lacks the resolution .

The pCloud download link is here (external link).

Rules are simple:

Download the image file from the current week

Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

The owner of the original image will choose a winner

The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

(Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

This is based on only a single image, IMG_4037. I straightened it, cropped it, played with micro contrast, and sharpening to bring out more detail, Brought out some shadow detail. Brightened it a little, and purposely oversaturated it just a bit to make the colors more vivid. I also used DXO's new DeepPRIME noise reduction which can be used very effectively even on low ISO daylight images. All edits done in DXO PhotoLab Elite.

Struck me as wanting a deep, dark Victorian / Edward Gorey engraving look. Used just the EV 0.0 version in Aurora HDR, then gave it a "muddy"/ sepia look, saved as tif; then Luminar 4: adjusted colour, adjustable gradient to darken the sky, contrast, slight cropping; then to Paintshop Pro to add a light in the attic and saved as a jpg (less than 10mb).

It looks a bit like a Disney animation cell. I like it.

Thanks. Yes, that's an apt comparison.

Wanted to try this one too. Merged the 3 images in Aurora and then 1 more time through Aurora to bring out the sky some more; then Luminar 4 for some sliders: dehazed, a touch of Golden Hour, bit of sun to the right, adjustable gradient (top+ and bottom-), some colour warmth. Resized in MS Photos.

Both are based on IMG_4022 only. The first one is an attempt at a late afternoon/early evening golden hour look. The second a colored engraved look, based on a modified PhotoLab preset. Processed in PhotLab Elite.

Here is my normal workflow:
1. Photolab4 > denoise and lens correction > export as DNGs
2. Photoshop/ACr > levels > dehaze (if needed) and a smdgin of clarity

The Castle (all 3 images)

I wish I had zoomed in ob the garden and eliminated the sky. So in my next attempt I'll try to do that digitally - not easy with only 10 megapixels; I may just end up with mush!

Trying to get a quart out of a pint pot!

My traditional method

1. Photolab 4 > crop, denoise & lens correcyion
2. Photoshop/ACR > Levels > ACR adjust clarity, col temp & brightness.
3. Topaz Clarity > Color & Contrast Boost
4. Resize and sharpen with Topaz Infocus

I have to admit that the second image is more pleasing to the ey but whether it would be that way second time of trying, I don't know. Certainly, any brushwork would be much easier with the 4x enlarged image.
