Alfredo, have you considered a proper hiking bag like one of the ones from Osprey for example and then insert an ICU into the bottom section? That way you would have great shoulder straps etc. I’ve been considering this myself. Only downside is you won’t get rear opening which I quite like on camera packs

Hey Eddie, yes I have. I found one that I liked but can’t recall the name. Might be an Osprey. Let me dig into. I think there are some strong advantages going with a dedicated hiking/alpine bag.

Today is the last day of the 24-105mm sale, I think.

Thanks David. It’s in my BH shopping cart now.

I have an Osprey Kamber 42 - It's designed as a ski/snow pack but has rear opening ;)

Oooh nice one Lee, I’ll check it out. Might be what I’ve been searching for

Edit - bag looks awesome. Big enough to take the camera gear plus my hiking gear. Will take my hydration pack too. Just need to see if a tripod can be attached somehow. Do you use yours with an ICU? Any pics of the camera gear in it ?

I completed a 5 mile hike in the mountains today about an hour from me. Starting elevation 7155 up to 8200. I’m definitely not in peak trail hiking shape yet especially lugging up 25lbs+ of gear.

I think my Fstop backpack has to go. After an hour of hiking the pack gets uncomfortable. Think it’s the poor shoulder straps and lack of padding. Anyone own the Shimoda Action backpack? Considering the Action X50.

Also, I need to do something about my Gitzo tripod. With the FLM ballhead and leveling base, the whole thing is kind of heavy. I don’t mind it for short hikes without much elevation gain but today’s hike was rough.

Lastly, I want to add a mid range zoom lens and think the Sony 24-105 will meet my needs.

Yeah I walked up 2 flights of stairs today.... whew that wided me at 1200ft of elevation to 1242ft of elevation. :p

This is the one I was interested in. The back flexes as you move. Hence the name spine. Will have to look at unloaded weight and compare it against the Osprey that Lee recommended and the Shimoda. By the way, the main designer from Fstop started up Shimoda after he left Fstop. Thought that was interesting.

Tripod on the side. Hydration pack in the rear too. I usually have a Pacsafe medium or a smaller Amazon one depending on what I need.

No photos. Remind me & I'll get one tomorrow.

Final question (maybe not :) ) , does it cause an issue with the back not being meshed i.e no void between your back and the pack? My current hiking pack is like that and I swore the next bag would have a void of some sort as I always end up soaked through on my back from sweat due to the contact (on full day hikes). Apart from that the bag looks perfect though

Congrats David, seems to be a strong performer for landscapes. I sometimes wonder if I should have went that route instead of the Contax 35-70 but I haven’t gave that enough of a try out with Covid so will hold fire just now. The extra reach to 105 is appealing

I have a Manfrotto Off Road which is mesh but I don't like the side access - it is comfortable though. I don't really find the non-mesh much of a noticeable issue tbh with regard to excessive sweating.

Man...this thread moved fast today...a bunch of good stuff...but I am too late...

I have been on site all week here in town...and tonight sat down to edit a set of prom pictures from last weekend...for family.

I don't quite have the control of added light that Carlo has...but I am learning as I go, using it more and more. I remember when she was born...and now she is a senior in high school...

Looks great to me Travis. I'm a complete speedlight newbie.

---------------

During my hike this morning, I captured this image of a group of trees in the snow. I was really interested in the various characteristics of the trees. Some were fallen. Some were bare. Some were taller than others.
