My first attempt at a studio portrait.

I just bought my first studio lighting setup. :-) Just a basic one light setup for now. Because of COVID restrictions, I only have myself as a test subject for the time being. I think I'm going to have fun with studio lighting once I play around with it some more.

And a lovely test subject it is! Great portrait too!

other than me being an old fat dude, who has to force a smile, which then looks forced...

please give me some of your thoughts on these:

32"-ish octobox with a single speedlite inside running about 1/3 less than 1/8th power. a sheet of 32x48 white foamcore positioned right in front of me with a slight upward angle to lessen the under chin shadow...

In the first image especially, you look like someone who didn't want his picture taken, even when the photographer was his best friend.

My tip would be,
position the light, so as to get catchlights in your eyes Dave.
so in your example i guess it needs to be lower.

Good job with the catchlight this time. For the overall lighting, I like the second image better. The very dark side in the first image comes off as harsh and would be too dramatic for an ordinary headshot for ID, business, or anything similar.

I like the lights better in this one.

BTW...facial expression reminds me of the look I got way back when, from my Drill Instructor when I screwed up. :-D

It took a little work to set up this shot. Kinda funny I thought.

Yes, it is. :-D:-D For an encore (sorry, I know you didn't ask), stand a bottle of water on the rock, almost out of reach.

Those rings don't always work as signals. I guess they should be made with embedded flashing colored lights.
