Got bit by the bird bug a couple of weeks ago, decided to post an oldie from the vault. Haven't picked up a camera, or been on POTN in about 8 or 10 years. My go to spot for pictures was the Dauphin Island Airport on Dauphin Island in Alabama. They (the county) decided that they needed to fence off all the property, imminent domain (steal) numerous houses from residents that had lived there for years so they could keep birders/people out and off their property. Small airport, the most planes that I ever saw down there were maybe 3 at any given time, usually there weren't any at all. It was a place where you could walk over to the beach on the sound side and sit for hours taking pictures of all kinds of birds, or you could pull off the road beside one of the long ponds and use you car as a hide. Just a really good place to go.

I rode down there last week, keeping my fingers crossed that their fence had been taken down by all the hurricanes we've had this past year. A good portion of the rails apparently had been destroyed by the storms, but the county wasted no time whatsoever putting them back. I was amazed at the shape that little area was in. There was construction going on at that little 1 runway airport, I guess expanding it for all the non planes that they have that *might* show up one day. The entire island leaves a lot to be desired now. That was my first trip down there in years (and probably my last). vmad

Anyway, I've so enjoyed seeing all the pictures that are being posted, I'll be lurking around admiring all of them. If I can find another place to venture off to with my camera, that doesn't require walking miles, I'll post some new pictures. Y'all keep taking and posting all of these beautiful pictures of birds, there's nothing better to brighten someones day than seeing pictures of them.

What a terrific shot, Ed! Nice timing on this catch.

Sorry to hear about the loss of you favorite birding spot. That's really a shame. This great egret image is really nice! The egret's pose makes it appealing.

Both the snowy egret and the great blue heron are terrific shots, Sharon!
