Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge

...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Choices again this week. Several SOOC images taken at approx 47°31'08.5"N 52°37'27.9"W one evening last December. Quickly fading light, moderately high ISO, wide lens for most shots. Calling on your software skills to chose one (or more) and bring out the potential.

Original CR3 files at: https://www.dropbox.com …_hd5su3-Fmjv1K-KCmya?dl=0 (external link)

Same, converted to DNG at: https://www.dropbox.com …-j1ZPDRP8eG0d-2ynb8a?dl=0 (external link)

Please let me know (PM, or here) if you have any problems accessing/downloading.

Cheers - Rob

Rules are simple:

Download the image file from the current week

Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image(s) and post their edited version to the thread.

The owner of the original image will choose a winner.

The new winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link.

The new challenge image(s) must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc
(Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Thanks Martin. Lots of options in those shots as the various submissions showed. Gene's was all about the stuff I left out. Nice treatment.

Martin - are those rigs mothballed / "retired" there, like Cromarty Firth? A lot of expensive hardware.

New challenge in a moment.

Yes, the scene is the Cromarty Firth in NE Scotland.

A quick first attempt; I used CR3 images 2262 and 2264

1. DxO PL4 > denoise and lens correction. Export as DNGs
2. SNS-HDR
3. Photoshop > Topaz Denoise > remove duplicate moon! > darken sky and brighten building > enlarge moon > crop, sharpen and save

P.S. I should also have moved the moon to the left onto a third!

Coming from the US, any (open) US-Canada crossing and then head east to North Sydney in easternmost Nova Scotia. There is also a ferry connection (1) Bar Harbour, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. From North Sydney, ferries run to either (2) Channel/Port-aux-Basques NL (then about a 550-mile drive to to St. John's if you wanted to visit there), or (3) a longer ferry ride from North Sydney to Argentia, NL (about an 80 mile drive to St. John's). If you wanted to visit the Labrador part of the province, you can take another ferry (4) from NL to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, which is then about 2 miles from the Labrador boarder. And, if you wanted to visit France while here, there's a ferry (5) to St Pierre and Miquelon, just south of the Island of Newfoundland!

At present, several of these are either not operating or on reduced/different schedules because of the pandemic.

Thanks Rob, I'll book mark this. I believe at present there are restrictions in place for foreign visitors due to the pandemic.

Tossing in a couple of mine - all using image 2256. (Likin' the lichen). Passed through Aurora HDR to bring out details, then to Luminar 4. Adjusted sliders to enhance colours, contrast and selective details; masked and de-noised the sky. Created a layer with the moon only and brought it back larger and repositioned.

This one much the same as previous, but somewhat different sliders and a crop.
