Thanks Ed, as is often the case, I had the camera set up wrong for AF on flying invertebrates, as I'd last used that camera for bird photographs. So I ended up with a million out of focus in flight shots. In the end I manual focused and nailed 2 out of the first 7 shot burst

Yes, gives them balance information for flight. I had to look it up myself lol.

Flies have two wings in contrast to most winged insects which have 4. That is the signature property of true flies. Hence the name Diptera for the order of files. (Di = two, ptera = wings.) The hind pair apparently evolved into these little vestigial organs that are called haltres or halters. They still seem to be useful in flight, though, and that is probably why they did not disappear entirely.

Thank you for the info. One of the best parts of the forum is learning stuff other than photography. I follow the "statues" thread because of the history that most people include with the photos, & I've certainly learned a lot about bugs.
