Wow, great job on bringing all details back cleanly, especially on the trees, very impressive!

I couldn't use my GO-TO RAW processor PL4 due to the camera not being supported.

Ditto!

Not for competition. I'm not in it to win it ... just killing time.

.... => PL4 for adjusting selective tone, contrast and vibrancy, add vignette.

Any thoughts - anyone - on DxO/PL4 vs. Luminar 4 or Ai - if anyone has tried both? I have Luminar 4 and Ai but mainly use Lum 4 mostly because of its layer tools. (Also use Skylum's Aurora HDR which does a very nice job on some images - even singles; also GIMP and an ancient PaintShop Pro occasionally). I did a trial download of PL4 (now expired) but didn't get to play with it much. Interested in any thoughts/experience. Found this video where an editor uses both PL4 and Luminar in his workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyXU4Tf-b40 (external link)

... and, from the good old days, Canon F-1n, FTb, Mamiya 645 (m1000s), etc. -- Rob

Haven't used it, but I see a lot of folks using and liking Capture One, which also I haven't used. You may want to do a trial on C1

Recently there was an all day event by Skylum called Deep Dive for Ai. If you have the time, you will learn a lot about what you can do using AI...

Just as an example in conjunction with PS, you can work using smart objects in AI Dont want to pay rent to Adobe, I get it, you can pick up a stand alone copy of PS Cs6 and its yours, no rent Also using PS when your finished working in AI, it takes you wright back into PS, no extra step of saving it to a file.

Sheep shot. My main aim was not to loose definition of the sheep's fleece. Aurora did a pretty good job.

View of Derwentwater. I used SNS-HDR for this one but it could not recover the burned out clouds. My Photoshop brush work did improve things a bit. I tried sky replacement but gave up as grey hills on the left merge into grey cloud.

Round-up time; here are some brief comments

Reservoir Dog - good to see GIMP in action and a well placed Jurassic monster but tyhe colours have been bleached.

RDWP(1) - over exposted

RDWP (2) cannot fault this one including some detail in the sheep

rrblint (1) - another superb job (better than mine!). Admirable work on the clouds. Sorry that you could not use all features of PL4; the Panasonic FZ28 did not last long and was replaced by the FZ30. Only the Silkypix RAW processor will do lens correction as far as I know.

rrblint (2) - bleached sheep :-(

navydoc - Kodachrome was extinct when I took this shot, good retro though

'Peano - good menagerie but what happened to the colour?

So it's a tie between Don and Rob. Rob has been kept busy with competitions recently sop I'm going to hand the torch to Don (rrblint) this week.

I didn't try to adjust color. It wasn't a serious edit, just an exercise with copy and paste.

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

I got a new lens: EFS 10-18 and went to a favorite location to test it out.

HERE'S THE LINK (external link) to a RAW file.
