Not planning to get the 200-600: way too big for me. When I was still shooting Canon DSLR, the size/weight of the 70-300L sometimes dissuaded me from going out. I've toughened up some since then, but I can't see myself lugging the 200-600 (if I could even shoot with it for very long, which I'm not sure at all). Apricane flickr

DavidArbogast Cream of the Crop More info | Apr 30, 2021 00:49 | #48004 I am way past due for a PC upgrade. I was originally thinking of building my own, but I’m getting drawn to the idea of a m1 mac mini for a few reasons: 1. I’m sarting to lean towards picking Final Cut Pro to be my video editing choice, so that necessitates a mac. 2. I love how minimal the mac minis are: sleek, small, ultra-quiet, and ultra low power consuming. 3. The m1 processor is impressively powerful compared to intel and amd processors. David | Flickr

That said, there are some drawbacks. The m1 version of Photoshop doesn’t (yet) support any third party plugins, so I’d have to run PS in a pre-m1 version. And Apple is just getting started rolling out the m1 to all their computers; I’d hate to commit to a 16GB m1 mac mini when they might roll out a more powerful 32GB m1x mac (mini or imac or mbp, etc.) later this year. Thoughts and recommendations? I can be patient, but confess my patience has begun wearing thinner of late - at some point we just have to poop or get off the pot. I went through the whole thought process a bit ago David (pre M1). I was editing on my MacBook Pro for years but a combination of the small 15” screen and the fact it struggled with 4K footage edits I decided to upgrade. By that point I was into the iOS ecosystem (I don’t mind being locked into Apple as I feel more goes wrong on PC cos I can tinker with things) so was initially going to get a 5k iMac. The inability to upgrade the RAM was the main concern so I started looking at the Mac mini. The main concern there was my lack of knowledge on egpus so I ended up building a high spec Intel desktop with a nice BenQ monitor. Having said all that, it would be a tougher decision now with the M1 chips. I like the new iMacs but not keen on the colour options but again a thought needs to be had about the RAM upgrade ability (from memory you can change the ram in the iMac). In terms of longevity my MacBook Pro 2015 still runs light room and photoshop as fast as my new PC pretty much so I don’t think you would have an issue with speed with a M1 iMac or Mac mini for many years to come if you can get a good base line RAM amount. Sorry that probably wasn’t much use now that I’ve read it back but that was my thought process. The fact my 2018 iPad Pro non-M1 can handle 4K edits no problem at all makes me think the new M1 machines would be absolute beasts Thanks for your thoughts Eddie. David | Flickr

One thing I forgot to mention in favor of the m1 mac mini is availability. I’ve looked at some windows based options (including building a pc) and nothing I want is in stock. Side note: who knows when I’m ever going to find pair of xbox series x in stock! ![]() The m1 mac mini is surprisingly affordable for all its power…if I buy one and find it doesn’t meet my expectations I can move on to something else and work out a different use for the mac mini. But, I think you’re right - it’s going to have the power I need. 16GB is the max, and that’s questionable, but Ii think the m1 macs have a unified memory system works super-efficiently with the SSD when overloaded. Theoretically that could shorten the life of the SSD, but that concern is mitigated by the fact that it’s a very affordable computer. Above it all I need a new desk - my wife took over mine. And I need a great monitor…perhaps a BenQ.Having the same issue with the PS5. Not willing to pay the inflated prices all the re-sellers are charging on eBay so decided to stick with my PS4 until the 5 is more readily available Leica M11 | Leica Q2 | Sony α7RV

If, like most photographers, you're using large capacity HDDs to store files, prepare for a world of pain with bluetooth issues. It's an issue with the M1 mac mini's too...usb ports are not adequately shielded so HDDs interfere with the bluetooth signal. So I'm using wired connections on my keyboard, mouse, and external speaker. focalpointsphoto.com

Granted, I don't personally do video, but according to Sara Dietschy's review (and some others I've seen) of the m1 Apples is that they're more than capable of handling 4k video workloads (Sara Dietschy in particular uses the a7SIII), and that much more smoothly/easily than the last-gen Intel macbooks. Don't know how that would compare with your current rig, but it might be worth looking into that review. (She does some of her testing on Final Cut Pro as well.) Apricane flickr

I would definitely look at a Mac Mini. That M1 chip works really well when you have the software that was coded for the chip. More and more are coming up with updates to make it a native software for that architecture. It's easy mode instead of building your own. This comes from the guy that recently built his own. I debated hard on the M1 vs my Windows I9. Intel won this battle, but maybe not the next one. If you need a video card, the decision may be made for you already. The Mac. I used my old card, and it is now the bottleneck in my system. I am trying to get a good one, but they are so hard to come by. Mike
