Daniel, I'm thinking of upgrading to the M50 Mark II on your recommendation. I'll probably also get the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. Then I'll just carry the 22mm, 32mm and 56mm.

Tbh I’m not sure if it would be as big of an upgrade for you since you got the original M50! I believe it’s mainly just a newer processor and Eye AF in Servo that are the main differences! My M5 was a lot older so was more of an upgrade! If you can get a good price for your M50 then may be worth it but otherwise maybe look into the differences a bit more before making a decision!

Also beautiful image, really nice reflections!

Ah, thanks, Daniel. I didn't realize it wasn't such a big upgrade for me. I'll look into it though. I'm holding off on the R series for now!

Yeah if anything the R6 or something like that would be better value but yeah I wouldn’t recommend it for you since you have the M50. People with the M6 and older it’s good but not so much for M50 and M6 II owners.

I'm contemplating buying an M50 Mark II to use as a carry around camera when I don't feel like lugging around my 1Dx Mk II. My current backup is a G12 which is a pretty good little camera but the M50 has caught my eye.
Plus with an adapter I could use some of my L glass on it and it sounds like it would be a good - if not quite pocketable - walking around camera. The fact its got a viewfinder is a big plus for me and the focusing system sounds pretty great.
I don't want to start duplicating lens systems with RF lenses since I've finally got all of the EF lenses I need or want. I mostly shoot car shows and architecture with the urge to do some more landscapes but the latter two are what I have the 1Dx for.
I was thinking an M50 might be a nice addition for family gatherings and casual local car shows. I've got an EF 40 STM but I'd probably get the 15-45 kit lens with the M50 for general use and try out my L glass for different situations.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Would recommend the M5 if you can still find one, got one for the days I don't want to carry my 5D2 with battery grip

Look as the 11-22mm EF-M lens, to be honest that should be your first purchase for it in your use case. The 15-45 is surprisingly good. The 22MM EFM f2 is also a good one to have. I also have the EF40 and I grabbed the EFS24 both pancakes are excellent on the EOS-M

At the time I looked at the M50 (M50 mk II was not out) but Im a still guy rather than video so the M5 was better for my needs, I also have the G5x but the M5 blows that away in every aspect. If you was thinking of the M50 just get the mk II

Another stellar lens is the 55-250 EFS STM probably not a good choice for the subject matter but still nice to have with surprisingly good optics. I do use my L lenses on it and of course they are wonderful but in most cases the size defeats the purpose I may as well slap on my APSC 50D body. Sigma makes some stunning EF-M mount lenses also. The 17-40 L works well on it but again the size is creeping up when you do that.

Unless you have handled one of the EOS-M boys your going to need to adjust your grip a bit, I certain love using the M5 but it is small I still prefer to size and grip of my 5D2, sometime its so small and weights nothing I find it hard to grip the thing for long session and your sort of get cramp in your hand trying to hold such a small surface and control the buttons its a little cramped. But don't let that put you off. Being a more stealth camera no one takes any notice of you with the M series and im sure you know walking down the street will a full frame monster you get noticed.

I guess each persons needs are different as I only do stills but I find the M50 II night and day better compared to the M5 due to the AF!

The only thing I’d say that’s better about the M5 is the extra dials. I’d say the rear screens resolution is nicer but since the M50 II’s is fully articulating I’d take the lower resolution in favor of that.

Local spring flowers
Went out for a bike ride and brought my M5 with 18-55 kit lens along. All of these were by the side of the bike path.

Ant level view. Got to love the tilting screen (there was no way I was getting below this flower)

Already gone, I really like the tilting screen (somewhat of the Aliens from War of the Wolds)

A little wider view

I really like the size / weight of the M cameras / lens compared to my larger kit. The tilting screen really allows me to get a different perspective without strange contortions. Now if I can only figure out how to get the live view to work for night photography (trying to focus at night is an adventure that typically does not end well)

Regards
Rick
