I was wondering what you would consider an ideal lens for a good panoramic view from a mountain top (mountain is only about 3500' high).

Thanks

That isn’t an easy question to answer without knowing more about the “subject” and what you intend to do with it. How far away is the subject? Is the subject a significant characteristic of the image? What camera; cropped or full frame sensor will make a difference. Are you perhaps thinking of several images, then stitching them together in post? What you might think about is renting or borrowing a wide angle zoom and see what focal length fulfills your needs.

'Not too wide a FL', and a fixed FL rather than a zoom

  • not many zooms are free from barrel distortion at WA FL
  • fixed FL WA is generally going to be free of barrel distortion than zoom
  • WA FL makes things at the far horizon receed into unrecognizable detail

For years I’ve had 24-70mm as the go to for just about everything and always had the 16-35 right there in the bag just in case I wanted the WA shot, the combo worked well. But most recently started having more and more appreciation for the versatility of the 24-105mm and it just works well.

If it was me doing the “ain’t no mountain highhhh enough, ain’t no river low enough“ excursions, then I would probably take the 24-105mm with a carbon fiber tripod and that’s all I need to make it work for me. You can stitch the images for panoramic view and then do an overlay of yourself on top of the panorama on a separate layer. But In the same spot of course.
iPhone works just as well for those quick moments if you just want to snap and then bask in, in the nature’s glory with a good view.

Let us know when you go out there, what you’ve used and how you tackled it.

GL

Get out and shoot

One thing to keep in mind if using this lens for such purposes is that many copies of the 24-105 are known to have extreme lens creep.

For work like this type of image stitching, everything must be done with extreme precision to ensure perfect results, so I would be extremely conscious of the zoom creep while taking the exposures, and do whatever I could to ensure that it doesn't happen, because just a tiny bit of creep could cause real trouble when you're trying to get every pixel from every frame to perfectly align with every pixel in all of the frames adjacent to it.

A very wide, very tight rubber band could be used to ensure that there is no creep whatsoever during the shoot.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
