So I purchased the Canon speedlite transmitter and tried it with my Canon 600 ex-rt flash. I set transmiter/flash on same channel, synced and fired several times that I tried it, then it stopped firing? Could it be because the flash base is making contact with the stand I have it set on or the flash metal mount?

Try to simply put a piece of adhesive tape on the bottom of the accessory shoe in which the 600EX-RT is mounted, so that the central pin (trigger) in the hotfoot of the flash is insulated from contact with the surrounding metal of the shoe. Purely a shot in the dark fix, since I have no idea how you mount your flash remotely.
Also check the remote trigger settings to make sure you did not inadvertantly bump any settings so that the transmitter is not longer communicating to the flash, due to a change in channel or flash groups setting.

Shot in the dark, but it often comes up with Godox gear; did you set a radio wireless ID code on either the transmitter or the flash? Because that setting also has to match between the two units. Think of it as a digital channel filter on top of the analog radio frequency channel.

I'm a woman. I shoot with a Fuji X100T, Panasonic GX-7, Canon 5DmkII, and 50D. flickr stream (external link)

Are you shooting in Manual Mode and what Power Levels, or E-TTL?
What types of Batteries, Alkaline or Nickel Metal Hydrides? Yes it does make a difference.
Recycle times and continuous shooting can make the 600 stop “popping”.
What brand of cold shoe do you have that the 600 is mounted on.
I use my 600’s mounted to metal shoes all the time.
Let’s get a baseline and then begin to trouble shoot.
