I've been looking at the Laowa macro lenses for a couple of years now, always found them interesting but had 2x capabilities with the Canon 100mm+tubes. Decided last year to repair my Canon rather than replace it. 11 months later, the same error with the lens, another $200 repair of a $600 lens because Canon's repair warranty is only 6 months. I'm giving Canon as little of my $$ as possible from here forward, so I got this lens. Like all new gear, there is a learning curve but I'm really beginning to like it without regrets. To get to 2x, the 100mm+tubes was a full 2.5 inches longer than this lens. Now with the tubes, I have a range from 1x-3x (approx.), great for small things in the studio (controlled environment). Made of metal, smooth & sleek. Some don't like this, saying too difficult to turn focus ring w/o rubber grip. I will add one of those rubber band type focus assist thingies (wow, thingies is a word!, didn't try to correct spelling), but only so I can cut a notch in it so I can tell when I'm at 1:1 without looking at the barrel. It feels like it's put together well.
Not for: Someone who already has 2x capabilities & are happy with their results.
For: People who need a first macro lens, replacing and old lens, do not have 2x-3x abilities, and for people suffering from gas that can't be
helped by Beano.
Here is a 2x shot in the studio of my new pet, Bruce Lee. I could not get a shot of his face @ 2x because every time I got that close he jumped on my lens. I only know this lens a little & certainly no where near a macro expert compared to many other here, but if anyone would like to know anything about this lens, has any questions, or would like more examples just ask.
