Thank you!

I pulled the trigger on the Tokina AT-X 14-20 F2.0...

My thought process: It cannot be WORSE than the kit lens I'm dealing with now, and it's on the cheaper side being $359 on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com …tle_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (external link)

Good Coma results:

Good Vignetting:

Three uses come to mind:

1) Astro
2) Narrow Slot Canyons
3) A few of the Arches around here only have very close up vantage points, so 14mm will be useful.

Lots of people like the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f2.8 all-manual lens for night/astro landscapes.

Most (all?) of the recent Canon EFS lenses *are* fly-by-wire focus. There are a few exceptions, like the Canon EFS 17-55mm f2.8.

I have some super wide zooms; a Canon 10-18mm (slowish, fly-by-wire), and a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 1st gen that is a gem. When you click the lens into Manual focus it is all mechanical! You could use a little blue tape to lock focus on an MF lens.

Fly-by-wire means that only the focus motor can change focus. If you twist a ring in Manual AF mode you’re controlling the focus motor, not the mechanics of the lens.

Currently my lens of choice for nigh sky photography is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS

I would like to get something that lets in more light to allow me to lower my ISO for milky way shots.

Can anyone recommend any lenses for Canon? I don't have a budget in mind.

I shoot with Canon R6 but happy to use EF lenses.

I use the Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art lens on my R6 with the adapter.

Sure I would enjoy seeing your rendition of the shot I posted or of either of these as well.

This is the original photo I started with. To get this I had to hold my cell phone across in front of the bottom 1/3-1/2 of the lens and work it up and down so as to not leave a strong transition point.

This is what an original photo looked like without using my phone in front of the lens. You will notice the composition has changed between these as the Milky Way kept climbing in the sky as I was trying different amounts of feathering with the phone across the lens so had to adjust for that.

Anyone care to share what they're using for lighting?

I'm looking for a very specific flashlight, if anyone wants to go on shark tank with me:

1) Beam pattern adjustability (Flood to spot)
2) Color Temp adjustability - able to go from 2500k (this would be warm toned) to 6000k (cool toned)
3) Durability - weight/dust/water/weather/impact resistance
4) Size - something that will be fine in the bag for several miles without regrets
5) Brightness adjustment - obviously needed so some can start taking photos in the blue hour/earlier, and obviously distance "throw"
6) USB Charging or even better mag charging

I was able to get to Joshua Tree National Park this past Saturday for some Milky Way nightscaping. I decided to try and make a pano of Arch Rock. This location gets too crowded in the summer for Milky Way shots, so I opted to create a blue hour composite.
.
I got to the arch just before sunset and found 4 or 5 other photogs already setup. They were very nice and let me squeeze in for 15 minutes, so I could create my pano of the scene. Lots of people climbing all over the arch, so what I thought would be 10 minutes probably turned into 15 or 20. I think we missed an incredible sunset as the people on the arch kept pointing back to the west stating, "the sky is red". You could see the arch turn a bright orangish/redish hue for 10 minutes or so as well.
.
After I got my pano of the arch, i drove down to Porcupine Wash, (about 10 miles south of the arch), to get my sky images. I spent about 4 hours down there getting various tracked exposures.
.
This is the final product. I oriented the MW in its natural position as it would appear at this location roughly midnight.
.

Ground = 14-24mm Z @ 14mm, 5 exposures
Sky = 20mm F/1.8 Z, 7 tracked exposures

Well done and great explanation... It saddens me that narcissism has taken over the outdoors so much that we have to resort to clone stamp tools, composites, etc.

Luckily there's still places that require several hours of night hiking, real actual effort to get to, and that tends to weed out the mobs of people on their never ending treadmill of "checklist" shots.

You did an amazing job with what you had!!!
