If you have an old DSLR or other digital camera AT LEAST 10 YEARS OLD - so it's a moving target with time - please do post some information on the camera and some sample shots showing how it performs now.

Why did you buy the camera?
How do you think it holds up - strengths and weaknesses?
Is it still relevant, and if so, how could it be used today?

Please make sure that the images you post have the EXIF data included if they are not automatically posted by the system.

CANON POWERSHOT G1: Vintage 2000

I have disposed of very few of the cameras I have had since I began my photography almost 40 years ago. Today, I had a reminder of the earliest digital camera I got when I saw a throwback review by Gordon Laing of the Canon PowerShot G1, released in 2000: https://www.dpreview.com …r-old-powershot-g1-camera (external link)

I still have mine, with box and all the various attachments, including wide angle and telephoto lens add-ons. So, I decided to dust my copy off and see if it would still work, and if so, how it would behave.
I still have the original batteries and they still work perfectly, so after making sure everything was charged up, with the date and time reset, and making sure I was shooting in RAW - an almost unique feature of the camera at the time, I popped in a 2GB CF card and went in search of some sample images.

Now, with the very dubious weather - sunny bursts that could lull one into a false sense of security before squalls descended, I decided to stay in my garden, thus limiting the range of images available. Still, I got a few shots out that confirm it still works as well as it did over 20 years ago! I even got Boris, my garden helper to pose for me as he took a break from his busy work schedule.

Certainly, it doesn't have the dynamic range of today's tech, but I am impressed at how well it performed. Given it has CA issues, it would still be viable for someone shooting in greyscale and posting on-line.

But for me it has its place in history.

CANON EOS D30: Vintage 2000

This was not the first DSLR I got. My first was the EOS 400D (released in 2006), but I was intrigued by this unit when I saw it given a double-page spread in Tom Ang's book: "Photography the Definitive Visual History: (see 1st photo). In it Tom explained how this camera was the first ASP-C CMOS sensor DSLR to come on the market, making it significantly cheaper than previous CCD-sensor cameras.

Intrigued, I thought it would be great to have a sample for a class I was preparing on the technical history of photography, so I did a search on the web and found one on e-Bay, from a shop in Japan: unused, for $60. It turned out the camera had been damaged by being scored across the LCD during unpacking and it was never sold. Since it was so cheap I purchased it and when it arrived I found it worked perfectly! So, I bought a dead D30 camera with a good body, and got Canon in Auckland to marry the two together, clean it, and give me a report on its condition. They confirmed it was essentially unused, and I have take a few shots with it, being amazed at the quality of the images from its 3.3MP sensor. Interestingly, although it had an APS-C sensor, it uses only EF lenses as the EF-S mount was not developed until the EOS 20D a few years later.

The D30 beside its contemporary PowerShot G1

I was further intrigued to read a detailed report by the late and highly-respected photographer Michael Reichmann, who created the Luminous Landscape website, and was the author of numerous books, and featured in many exhibitions. In his report he made the stunning comment that for the first time a DSLR had bettered the best printed images scanned from a top of the line SLR, printer and scanner combo up to 8"x10" and equal to 13"x19". His comments caused a lot of stir, but others confirmed his findings and certainly I am impressed by the results.

Here are DPREVIEW's original and throwback reviews of this cool piece of kit:
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canond30 (external link)
https://www.dpreview.com …ck-thursday-canon-eos-d30 (external link)

I am totally impressed by the quality of images it cans still produce: very little noise, wonderful colour... I have used this to post on-line before and I believe it still does a great job.

Canon PowerShot A550, good manual settings, needs some extra contrast in PP, nice camera but drains the batteries very fast.
With the macro setting:

Shot with Canon G2. I still have the camera, it still functions just fine. This shot was actually taken in 2004, but the fundamental photo quality has not changed after 17 years, so I felt it was valid to post.
It was shot spontaneously, stopping on the side of the highway in Ireland, no tripod. Two shots taken, with the idea of merging the two into a panorama, but with no special fixtures to rotate the camera about the lens node position. Two 4 MPixel shots merged into one (the posted shot a deliberately low res rendition to discourage unauthorized internet usage) Like OP, I still have the WA attachment and the tele attachment lenses that screw in in front of the built-in lens.

Canon 50D (2008) (external link) + EF-S 17-85 (2004) (external link).

Purchased used in 2015 for $420 CAD. Definitely showing its age at high ISO. Still, the sensor retains more detail with less noise than my iphone 8 (2017) (external link) which is 9 years newer. 50D performs well in daylight. Center AF point focused quickly and accurately in twilight. It's slow to write to CF when using raw+jpg. Pairs well with EF 70-300 v1 for birds, sports, airshows, etc.

Good beginner camera for kids/teens although 5D2 + 24-105 can probably be found for reasonable price that might justify spending a bit more for a better sensor and video capability. Main 50D downsides are basic feature set compared to today's devices and no video with Canon firmware. Apparently Magic Lantern works for video although I haven't tried it.

1. ISO 3200. LR6 camera standard profile. No exposure adjustments, no NR applied.

2. ISO 12800. LR6 Adobe standard profile. Colour anomalies, banding, and loss of detail. +0.5 exposure, +25 clarity, +50 vibrance. AWB was too cool, set to 10k, +40 tint. +25 luminance NR. Useable as 4x6 print or social media.

50D (2008) (external link) vs iphone 8 (2017) (external link). Newer phones probably perform much better than my old iphone but still interesting to see how a 13 year old APS-C sensor holds up. Despite 9 years of development, small sensors are small sensors.

This was taken at the inner harbour of Auckland's waterfront. Moored along here is a collection of very expensive vessels that must run into the hundreds of millions. My favourite on this occasion is a yacht of an older design, with a curved stern - a 'cruiser' stern that harkens back to a different age of sailing.
