Thanks Renata. Here's the ancestor I was thinking about regarding my beard. He was my 2nd great grandfather.

You should recreate this photo when you are fully fit and home before you trim the beard :)

Hopefully not long now

finally got around to a recent trip video, and why I love the A7siii, nearly all hand held so some jerkiness here and there, however I think it's quite usable for family video. While the camera is still heavier than I like, I used clear image zoom to fill in the gaps, using a single 18mm f2.8 samyang prime to keep weight low and participate in the blazing hot and humid weather. This is mostly SOOC, with my own custom HLG profile, had to adjust the WB in some of the cave shots, because they were nearly pitch black in some areas with colored lights.

it's awesome. the stabilization isn't bad at all for handheld. Great family.

Cool video Charlie and yeah footage looks great. For your semi-slow motion scenes is that 60p at 40%?

Also, my knowledge of clear image zoom is basically zero but does that mean your 18mm lens is digitally zoomed to 36mm? And does it still leave you with the full 12MP of the sensor ?

the entire thing was filmed at 60p, since I was chasing my kids the entire time, some slowed down to 40% as you said, some down to 80% for a slightly butter look while looking somewhat realtime, and some left alone. Clear image zoom is essentially crop mode from my testing (although it works like an electronic zoom mechanism), slightly better than simply using the crop button, and it keeps my timeline 4K 60 (exported 1080 for vimeo since I have no space), so I dont have to do any fiddling, it does not use the full sensor, since it's cropping and interpolating in realtime. A higher MP camera has more crop ability in video, but it usually comes at the cost of the main fov being hit with lesser IQ and rolling shutter problems which makes hand held footage unbearable.

screen grab from the Siii + apple auto correct is nice, and usually when I want a mix of stills and video while filming, I simply do an in body export to phone

the dynamic range of HLG3 is good enough for me with a custom film style look, that I don't deal with the complexities of SLOG3. There is very little manipulation needed, so it works out great. Export from camera is also nice in that you get some exif info, which you dont seem to get when you export from davinci resolve. Also nice that I can upload straight to my NAS back home and airdrop to my brother/in laws on the spot.

Thanks Charlie! Great info in there. One small query about “ slightly better than simply using the crop button, and it keeps my timeline 4K 60”. Can you elaborate? Does the crop button change the FPS? Or effective FPS?

just for some context, the Siii is a slightly quirky body in that it behaves a little different than any other sony body because of the 12mp

when in 4k, you simply cannot press the crop button, wont work, you have to switch to 1080, then use crop as desired. That's instantly dead to me, too much trouble.

when in 4K, you can use clear image zoom, which behaves like a rocker zoom that you see on the ZV1 and newly announced ZVE10, you have to map a button then control with joystick. I simply map my joystick center to activate clear image zoom, since in video mode, you dont really use the joystick (mapped to something else for stills), so I zoom out with the left and zoom in with right. It's variable, so you dont have to zoom all the way in, and since I'm filming in 4K, the entire clip is 4K, fps remains the same all the way through. I also adjust the speed of the zoom to fastest otherwise it's really slow by default for a slow zoom effect. You lose eye tracking once you start zooming, however, hasnt been a problem, normal AF works fine like 99% of the time.

Second hand shops, ebay or ask a friendly seamstress to make a white collar like that. The suit is going to be more difficult. Best of luck!

Or could you take the self portrait at the same angle, edit as close as you can to the other photo - B&W / grain etc - then do a head swap in photoshop?

If I can pull it off, a head swap in photoshop might be the easiest way to go. Finding a jacket and shirt with that style collar could be very difficult and/or expensive.

You'd certainly look good in that shirt. Maybe order when you get home to celebrate.

While we are on a video topic, can i have your thoughts on this video i did?

A7SIII+Weebil-S(Gimbal) and Mavic Pro 2

I liked it overall, there were a few clips that felt unnecessary, the pull back from the door in the hallway, I think there were three of the living room, the fourth one seemed extra. It is very smooth. I gotta work on that. I liked the fast transition for a couple of them, but the one that backed up to show that bathroom, coming out of the closet, that one felt odd. I agree, the running water stuff is odd, I know that a lot of REP folks do that, and I never understood it. Like David said, we have had so much rain we don't see it from the drought standpoint, but it just feels un-needed. Maybe show the shower area itself, rather than water running down the drain. That pool is killer...I want one like that!
