Try to find just a front dust cap for it ...

I was walking past B&H several days ago, and went in to pick up a couple, and got the bad news that it has been out of stock for a long time.

Canon ramps up production of products, rather than continuously producing everything in their line up.
Suppliers may have production interruptions (due to COVID) in parts they supply to Canon.
Shipping containers are in short supply...

  • Cargo carrying ships are delayed at anchor waiting to go to dock to be unloaded
  • Trucks transporting cargo containers to their destinations are in short supply, because there are drivers not working and because the available drivers are already engaged.
  • ...causing the available shipping containers to be full and unavailable

There is a backlog on a lot of products...semicondutors used in appliances and cars are in short supply, causing backlogs in delvery of those products. We are told our new washer is on backlog for 6-12 weeks; not just our brand, but other brands, too.

My employer has a 40 week lead time for one part of a product- that means, unless we can make or source it form elsewhere, that product has a 40 week lead time. One thing we are seeing is the manufacturing equivalent of buying up all the toilet paper. "We found a source for a part- buy enough to last us the rest of the year!" This causes priced to be bid up, which is part of the inflation we are seeing. Companies that embraced "Just-In Time" and "Lean" are having to change their operations since they are stocking up on parts in a way they didn't do so before.

Another problem is that Guangzhou province has been almost shut down. My colleague there has been under lock-down for several weeks because of a localized COVID outbreak; the lockdown just ended. Guangzhou is one of the larger manufacturing and port cities in China, and an awful lot of trade with China was disrupted.
There's also a container shortage, mainly because they are stuck in the importing countries, and are not being returned to Asia to be refilled.

Anecdotally, we don't have any trouble getting trucks for receiving incoming parts and shipping finished goods.

Wow!...a 40 week lead time! Just curious, which kind of part for what kind of product?

We live near Elkhart where they make all those resin lawn furniture, like Adirondack chairs, tables, etc. We ordered a set (tables/chairs) and it took months before we could get it. The plant nearby that makes the extruded "plastic lumber" that the surrounding shops use to make the furniture can't get enough plastic material, and also workers weren't working. So not only lead time is crazy, the increasing price that can be asked of customers is going insanely high in some markets.

This same furniture market is also in a duel with the construction industry, like vinyl siding and vinyl flooring. When those core components are scarce, and workers are scarce, all these things go up in price. Interestingly those are all items we are looking at for our home too. :(

So these lenses and teleconverters that have quite a few pieces in them, plastic and metal, are all sourced from different factories in many cases, so path from parts to a finished product on a shelf is long and arduous.

Wow...it seems to be affecting everything from A to Z. We, of course, always end up paying more and getting less service :(

One of our custom circuit boards, one of the driver chips behind that. The product is chromatography. We are designing around the part, so we'll wind up supporting two versions of the product to some degree. Part of the redesign is ensuring both boards act the same so we don't have to change the software, or make the different boards detectable by the software so it acts like a drop-in replacement.

Here's an article from two weeks ago. Hint: it isn't good news.

Yep, that confirms what I said in post #6, this thread although I heard about it first-hand. Shenzhen all but closed their airport, although my colleague in that city is still going to work. They are always getting tested for the virus, seems like they are getting tested once a week.

Ludwig drums and a few other brands of musical instruments were manufactured in Elkhart INdiana.
