You might be confusing the cranes with the off vertical pylons which the mega-large fabric dome is guyed to or suspended from.
Richard, I don’t think that the primary functions of the cranes is dome maintenance but more likely construction work.
A special walkway has been installed over the roof of the dome. We did the walk just before lockdown and had to wear safety harnesses and hook ourselves to the rigging provided, unfortunately SLRs were not allowed but small pocket cameras were ok. They have provided a resting and viewing platform at the very top from which there are some interesting views of the river and surrounding area. I have posted a picture from the top on previous page.

Here is the beginning of the river the Ahr. This smal river caused a few months ago a great disaster. A big waterflood distroying hauses, bridges and infra structure. More than 180 people lost their life. This happened in the Eifel Germany
