Are those wild? Or in captivity?

All the animals there are in "captivity", but the spaces are fairly large. The wolves (and there are bears in the park as well, they were quite shy that day) are most certainly not roaming freely across the park, for obvious reasons.

Looks amazing workmanship ! Well done

Edit - apologies but can’t for the life of me think what the female version of workmanship is (or neutral version) if there is one ?

Sony a9 focus tracking - definitely Locked On!

I live near a rodeo arena and love heading over there to shoot the action. The woman in these images is the "Header" in a Team Roping duo. She ropes the steer's horns and turns it so her partner, the "Heeler", can rope both back legs. This duo waits on either side of a chute that releases a steer. After the chute is opened, and the steer bolts for the exit, the duo takes off after it.

For this event, I set my focus area to Tracking: Flexible Spot S and focus on one or the other roper's head (while they're waiting for the steer to be released). I use back button focusing so I can take several bursts of shots without having to refocus. The two shots below were taken 1/5 of a second apart...that should give you an idea of how fast everything moves in this event.

I love how Sony's tracking feature allows me to maintain focus in situations like this. With AF Tracking Sensitivity set to "1", the Header's head stayed in perfect focus despite a horse and a rope moving in front of her.

I could be wrong, but I think that word, and "craftmanship" are not gender specific words.

yeah, with the right lenses, and good target acquisition the tracking on the a9 is crazy good. Cool shots by the way, I really like that second one shooting through the rope loops.

White Wolves (they don't get to go to people's cars and get carrots, probably because they'd be too naughty). Beautiful creatures, though.

Nice. Just watched a repeat of 'Call of the Wild' on my return flight sector today.

Awesome shots ,Mike. Love rodeo action. Caught some when I was in Moses lake year before covid. The other I really wanted to see for myself, demolition derby. Unfortunately missed those as my time was up and I got back.

Thank you, Eddie! It doesn't bother me; I'm old school :p

Whatever; it really doesn't bother me. I used to work as an architectural draftsman when I was very young and it was fine. Other insisted on being called draftsperson or draftswoman. Hey, I know I'm a woman, blood and bones and self-confident; so no worries here at all.

I sure wish there were more smart people out there like you! I have spent plenty of time doing architectural drafting, I learned to draft by hand, and now do it all in AutoCAD.

It’s odd how these decisions get made, both have “man” in it but craft is neutral and work isn’t. Every day is a school day :-)

It surely is odd. Life is a constant schooling process and we all depart still pretty uneducated :-D
None of that bothers me; too old for that :p

Smart? Nothing smart about architectural drafting; I went through 2 years of architecture but never finished, because I changed majors :)

Thanks Travis. BTW, I don't use tracking at all for BIF. Mark Smith recommends against it, and my own experiments confirm his findings. Besides, if you're trying to capture more than one bird in the air, you usually want the closest one to the camera to be in focus.

Thanks Neal. None of the national rodeos will let me shoot...they always have photographers under contract. There's a lot of local and regional action in AZ, especially in the winter, though. Demolition Derby would be a blast, and so would Roller Derby!
