I am not Lester, but I would say that he was exposing for the natural light in the background with the aperture and ISO settings.

Thanks.

The second one is ambient light only, first one my beautiful assistant (and spotter) is holding a bit of paper with some out of focus green grass printed on it.

Not only does this give a naturalistic background but the reflected light helps low the contrast. Has to be used sparingly else the beautiful assistant get pissed off though. :-P

Well, the paper technique is very effective, and one sees right away that it is special.

Lester you've bought us some really excellent photos, creatures.
That Burnet moth is a very attractive moth.

I trust your assistant understands how much she is appreciated, particularly here in her valuable role. :-)

Candy-striped Leafhopper. They are common but small and aren't noticed by most despite their bright colors.

Looks a bit like a ladybug, but it's a Milkweed Leaf Beetle (Labidomera sp).
