Interesting to get a comparison of the two alternatives.

So far, per the 2021 poll of RAW conversion in use by POTN members, Capture One still has half of the market share of users as Lightoom

Capture One just sent me an email announcing that they are developing panoramic stitching and HDR merging within Capture One.

Should be very interesting. Release is estimated for December.

Cool, but too bad it's so expensive.

It would be Lightroom Classic (LrC) as Lightroom (Lr) is mobile based and not as robust so not a fair comparison. As for the discussion - the age old questions comparing LrC and C1 Pro. What are your needs, hobby or pro shooter, budget, personal views, etc? Are you totally against the prescription model or you don't care. Some never update at all. Happy with using the cameras propriety software with an older version of PS, etc for additional editing. If I were a working pro I wouldn't care either way because those costs would be passed onto my customers.

If I was a working pro I might use both. C1 for portraiture and LrC for event shooting. I'm an LrC user and these days rarely use PS. I try and stay in LrC as much as I can. For really troublesome noise I'll use 3rd party NR. LrC is not the best when you push NR too much however I have posted 16,000 ISO shots here that were developed using only LrC. I'm hoping for NR Sensei one day but I'm not holding my breath. I gave Adobe heck again when ON1 released NoNoise. :-) Last post. Simon Chen did respond 2 years ago but he may not even be with the company today.

Not saying the combination of LrC and PS is not good for portraiture. Since C1 added layers there is an appeal in staying under one roof but I don't need all the tools C1 offers. I tried C1 about 4 times over the years. They are very good at colour and files look great out of the box. It was funny that someone posted a video here about how much better C1 looked "out of the box" compared to LrC. It did. 6 months later Adobe introduced Adobe Colour and bumped up the sharpening default from 25 to 40. Also LrC has added a texture slider which is comparable to C1's structure. I think things were different in 2005. We were expected to edit. I think these days instant results are important so first looks can make or break a deal. I could be wrong about that. There is a reason why home electronic stores turn the settings up the brightest and most vivid settings on the TV's.

I'm not that interested in Colour as IQ which is the first thing I test when I try software. I really wanted C1 to blow my socks off but didn't compared to LrC. C1 does have a more contrasty look which definitely has appeal. I learned how to use C1's import/export sharpening and other detail tools. Comparing both I did not see enough of difference to switch. You have to really have to learn LrC's Develop module to get the most out of it. I know I won't get more thumbs up posting images here using C1. It's all about composition, being at right place at right time and all that stuff.

I always upgraded Lr and Ps when they were perpetual so subscription doesn't phase me. I know myself and I'd probably be upgrading C1 every year too. One key element Portfolio that is integrated with LrC. Before LrC I used Zenfolio which cost me $150 a year. Now for $120 I get LrC/PS and a personal website.

Last year C1 offered one free year of Portfolio via SmugMug. Last I checked Portfolio via SmugMug was $180 a year so I don't think that was too much of a good deal. You take the time to build your site and then you have to pay. But that is just me. Also Portfolio is not integrated with C1.

So this is my summary of why I prefer Adobe over C1. As long as I can keep my files out of the cloud and they offer the 20GB plan for $10 a month I'm OK with it. I expect an increase some day and I'll see when that happens. I already have Affinity which I got for $25. I never use it. I just open it from time to time to update it.

Some didn't like Adobe Color at first came and still don't. I don't mind it but I also use Color Fidelity camera profiles. I like this fellow. A die hard C1 user but has good and balanced comparisons between both. Here is what he says about Adobe Colour. He also had another review comparing IQ between C1 and LrC. Some things he mentioned supported my take on it.

If any LrC users want more info about how to control the Develop Module this is well worth $15. He even has a video on how to apply both LrC and PS to reduce noise using layers.

For a hobbyist or anyone not wanting to spend more a it's fun technique if you have the time. Took a few runs at it but after I got the process down - it's pretty fast and easy. Using this technique will completely wipe out background noise as well as dedicated 3rd party software can. You have to be more careful applying NR on the subject because if too noisy LrC starts to break down and not look as good as Denoise AI, DeepPrime and other dedicated 3rd party apps. It's fine balance and no two files are alike.
