If something like that was facing us - could it cause any trouble?

P.

I could be wrong, but I THINK it IS facing us!!

AR2860 and proms. Huge lift off prom at top, hydrogen lifting into space. AR2860 is a small but very active region on the sun. Lots of spicules on the limb of the sun. sky was milky white due to haze, the fires out west and thin cloud.
Taken with a Lunt 102mm refractor, Quark Chromosphere, and ZWO ASI 174mm.

milky sky, looks better in the picture than it was. Also my new setup with the focus tube most of the way in.

AR 2859, Aug 25 2021, active region on the sun. Taken with Lunt 102, Quark Chromosphere, ZWO ASI174mm. 1000 images 100 stacked. Conditions - high heat and heavy haze.

I am never satisfied with camera or scopes, the better one is just around the corner. First I had an SW 100 f/9 with the Quark, then I wanted a faster scope to gather more light so I got the Lunt 102ED f/7 and then because I heard that aperture rules I got a SW Evostar 120 f/7.5. I love the size of the 120 but many if not most days the air doesn't allow it to perform well so I kept the Lunt 102 on the mount and only put the 120 on it when I thought the air was steady enough. Secondly I love the focuser on the Lunt, it is silky and the 10-1 wheel has NO backlash. The SW 120 focuser wasn't quite up to the Lunt and it DIDN'T rotate (of course now they have a "rotator" for it) but ALSO there is a baffle inside the focuser about 2 inches in so that I cannot use my Lunt CaK module as even turning the focuser completely in I cannot push the CaK in far enough to get to focus, so I changed it out for a GSO linear bearing focuser but the 10-1 wheel has a LOT of backlash, will be working on trying to fix that and hope to make it less hunt and peck.

Now on to the test. I got a mask holder and two masks from Michael, a 100mm and a 70mm. I put my 120 on the mount and took some images of AR2859, I then put the 100mm mask on and took images and then the 70mm mask and imaged.

The turbulence in the air to my eye and in the avi file seemed to be that same in all 3 configurations. I didn't try it on proms and I have seen the air a lot worse.

With the 70mm mask I get severe Newtons Rings, also with the 70mm at f/13 seemed to be less sharp.

The 100mm mask was just slightly less sharp that the full aperture.

The 120 was the best.

Looking at the corners of the full frame images (below) you can see that the 120 had the most movement, Autostakkert had to move the frames around moor and the 70 has the least movement.

Heya,

I got a small break late afternoon today after it rained some more, despite all these hurricanes, tropical storms and bad weather I've had since the beginning of June. Seeing wasn't terrible, so I got what I could quickly between clouds on AR2860 which is rounding the limb with some great limb prominence action going on, surge proms, etc, and the rapidly forming new AR2863 with its activity.

Sept 4th, 2021

Solar activity picked up over the past few days. I got another clear afternoon with passable seeing for my image scales. 6 active regions with visible sunspots on the disc at the moment. More coming!

a poor attempt at a gif, will try to make a better version

Prom 9/4/21 lifting off the surface of the sun in the space of 10 minutes! Very rarely do you get to watch as a prom moves off the surface in such a way
One of my first GIF's will be editing to try to make it better over time

not sure why the gif isn't working

Calcium K image of the Sun 09/04/2021. This view is in Calcium K which shows the lower chromosphere of the sun. The sunspots observed are actually cool areas that due to the temperature difference, appear darker. The CaK line is above the surface of the sun and below the chromosphere, sort of like low clouds on earth. My telescope equipped with a CaK module is actually looking through the chromosphere.
Taken with a Lunt 102ED and the Lunt CaK module and an ZWO ASI174mm camera.

Most of the big AR's are still going strong. Some have decayed already but the new ARs' sunspots are growing and all have penumbra now, a couple of multi-pole and di-pole groupings.

Trifecta of HA, CaK & Continuum:
