FE 100-400GM

This reminds me of when we have gone alpine skiing. Miss it so much and hope to be back on the slopes this winter. Great image!

I think Carlo has that lens.

In other news, I got the green light to buy the a1. Precision Camera in Austin has some in stock. Adorama too but they charge tax.

Congrats on the green light!

I might be going in that direction. The more I try to justify and compromise on other Sony cameras the more it makes sense to just save up and get the A1. It’s fully the first truly Jack of all trades. Speed and resolution. No compromise. All in a nice Sony body and not a bulky integrated grip body ;)

Love the tones used here. Just beautiful.

Guys..... I know there isn't a full palette of colours going on here but how does this shot look please colour & skin tone wise?

I also appreciate it's not with either of the lenses discussed earlier (FE85 here) but I'm having a bit of a refresh & trying to simplify things editing wise.....

I'm not sure if the skin has a very slight bit of green to it maybe?

Skin looks very pleasing on all three of my devices. Tested to make sure it did. For reference they were:

iPhone 12
iPad 12.9 Pro 2021
MacBook Pro 14 2021

Speaking of this MacBook Pro sheesh does this thing go!!!! Picked up the Max version and it spits out my A7RIV raw files without a hiccup! Best part for me? The return of this port. Built in SD. No more dongles!

I'm considering the 35i for environmental portraits. What do you guys think of that lens for that use?

It gets the job done, but my preference is Bigma 35 1.2 for environmental portraits. "Only" F2 tends to matter for environmental portraits when you are framing loose and pulling the background into the frame. You really want to throw it out of focus as much as possible. The 35i is also wider than 35mm, whereas the Bigma is a tad longer than 35mm, so you get a bit more compression that contributes to the degree of blur. In that regard, I found that that the focus breathing on the GM made it less than ideal for environmental portraits too as the FOV widens as the focus distance increases on that lens.

Of course downside to the Bigma is that its well...really big. Also worth considering is the new Sigma 35 1.4. I don't know a whole lot about it but from the samples I've seen on FM, it seems to render similarly to the 85GM.

I am still stuck on size of 14 for convenience but that 16 has so much real estate on the screen. I am also trying to understand what core set up I need...... ugh so much thinking

Congrats Omar and David on your M1 laptops. They look outstanding.

---------------

These are my initial test images with my a1. Captured handheld at ISO800 (cloudy day today). I'm impressed with the color from this camera and the EVF is excellent.

The A7IV is calling my cc. 33mp looks like a happy medium for me. I sold my RIV when I shifted to real estate because of the huge files. I still do portrait sometimes so I think the 7IV is perfect for me.

Who else pre-ordered?

For photography I think 33mp is a fantastic resolution. A7IV looks amazing.

I watched a Youtube today that made me question my choices: I should have gone with 32GB memory and 4TB SSD instead of 64GB/2TB. Also I know I’ll be regretting not getting the 16”. Nonetheless I’m super-excited for my Macbook Pro delivery!

Hopefully you will be fine and will appreciate the extra ram if you edit video. Not knowing how you will use it obviously but I managed for years on my 2015 MacBook Pro for my main editing and that only had 500 gig internal storage. Once you sort your workflow with external storage it becomes less of an issue. I kept the current years images on it and backed up the rest to externals (via my NAS) and never ran out of space. Less megapixels at the time though
