I use HSS to control ambient light. I am not sure how to do that with constant LEDs.

Desire to learn; a camera & a few other things.

Well I will chime in here about the 1D series cameras from canon

I have owned them since the 1D11. several reasons why this wedding and portrait photographer prefers the 1D series

1- The 1Dx2 that I have is a 20Mp sensor. I used to make 30-40 24x36 prints every year with this sensor......NO PROBLEM AT ALL
2- There is no better camera in Canons line up for AF accuracy especially with servo use. If the subject moves, this camera will get the shot. I have never missed a wedding processional shot with my Canon 1Dx2. Not a single shot since it came out in 2016
3- the 1Dx2 works phenomenally in dark dim wedding environments that I shoot in- MUCH BETTER than the 5D4
4- They all have dual cards now and similar features but the 1Dx series has awesome weather sealing features

Speed has very little benefit to me for what I do. Im in it for the AF systems. I realize I may be the exception to the typical 1D series buyer. But in the 15 years that I have owned 1D cameras......they have never let me down.......Canon let me down when they dropped the H sensor....but I adapted and I would never not use a 1D camera for professional work. When I have to have the shot.....I know the 1D will get me the results

Speed is highly overrated in my humble opinion. The R3 is something I keep looking at. 24Mp is more than enough for my needs. Speed or FPS....again little benefit for my needs

Completely agree. I've never "owned" a 1D-series but I've used a couple of them, all the way back to the H-sensor (which I also really liked).

Always wanted to get a 1-D series body, but around the time I was getting more serious about it, I jumped into mirrorless and figured I'd wait for a mirrorless version.
The EOS R3 kinda checks those boxes for me.

I'll admit, I'm a gear junky. But if I had to, I could shoot with my trusty 5D Mk2 (still have it) and get the job done. I just enjoy gear, so if it's something I can justify to myself I go for it.
Lots of people went mirrorless for size and weight. I don't care about either of those, all I wanted was accurate autofocus, and mirrorless did not disappoint. Even so, it's pretty tough to compete with the autofocus of the 1Dx3.

The manual for the EOS R3 is now available on-line.
I had guessed 1,100 pages, and it seems to be 'clocking in' at 1,037.

https://cam.start.canon/en/C010/ (external link)

This is really interesting. I remember trying to get the manual for the EOS R5 before it shipped and it was not available anywhere.

I even had a Canon contact who said there was nothing available at all for the EOS R5 until it shipped.

This makes me wonder if they're going to ship this body sooner, or if they just wanted to get the manual out there to try and steal some thunder from Nikon Z9?

Either way, I'm downloading it right now so I'll be ready when the EOS R3 arrives!

Alternatively, they're just giving us something to read until it finally arrives.

Thanks for the link. I followed it further and it looks like the 600 EX Speedlites are not compatible with the EOS R3 according to Canon, yet the MR-14EX II, 430 III and MT-26EX are listed as okay?

I believe that Canon released the manual for the EOS 1-DX Mk III, just a few weeks before its official shipping date.
I think that such a release of a user's manual is common for Canon to do, but I do not know if it is consistent across their product line.

I tend to download such manuals to my desktop computer, and also place them in my Android phone to read when away from home, to utilized spare time by reading, and to try to solve operational issues when I am out and about with an EOS camera.

I bet that Canon wishes to be viewed as being reliable (and bankable) with their pronouncements and therefore the beginning shipping date of 26 November, will hold for most purchasers.
(Perhaps a VIP to Canon, or sponsored shooter, gets theirs a few days early; not uncommon with some corporations' PR practices)
I bet that it will be hard to find Canon stating 26 November; that date was is most likely a date agreed to by all official Canon dealers, on a legally binding contract.

I agree that it is useful to start reading & studying now so that when we receive our cameras, we can enjoy enhanced results sooner.

I believe that as people are reading the EOS R3 manual, Canon is also at work making a bunch of tutorial videos on how to do this or how to do that, and get good results from the camera.

I hope that they clarify the compatibility of legacy Speedlites with the R3.
I agree with nardes' interpretation of that chart, and I just hope that there is some minor caveat that keeps a 600 EX off that list, but they will in-fact, function with the R3.
In the video from Canon Europe on the R3 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfNd3KTBKmc (external link) ), discussion was had at 26:00-in about Canon's goals of having new users of the R3, smoothly transitioning from their existing 'kit', over to the R3.
While they spoke of continuity of memory cards, and not needing to carry two sets of batteries and two sets of chargers, they did not speak of Speedlites specifically.
I can't believe that Canon would require volume owners of their gear to have to mothball their fleet of legacy Speedlites, and buy a whole new fleet of $1,000 units to be used with the R3, or carry two sets of different Speedlites (and different batteries, for the EL-1 at least).
I hope it is just a typo or something similar on that chart.
Maybe B&H in their EOS R3 Q&A section, we can find an answer on various Speedlite's compatibility. Also affected by this possible incompatibility; I'll look to see if it has been asked and already answered at B&H.

This is also the first time that *I* have seen such an Supplemental Information chart for a Canon product.
I like the idea of it.

I'll await Peter Read Miller's sports settings where he tells us he has no idea what this button does, you don't need it so just switch it off.

I did not find anything in the Q&A on B&H's EOS R3 page regarding older Speedlites, so I asked this:

"Canon published a Compatible Accessories chart for this camera and some 'legacy' Speedites are not on it. Will a Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, work on this camera body?"

Maybe someone at B&H knows, or there is an informed person somewhere who can answer it.

Back to their Compatible Accessories chart: I don't much understand their choice (or meaning) of the word "Mainly".
To me, it is vague.

Perhaps it is the weather sealing compatibility designs that keeps legacy Speedlites off of that Compatible Accessories list, or prompted their use of the word "Mainly".

For the AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter, Canon USA states:

"For a seamless transition from your current hot shoe accessories to the multi-function shoe, the Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 is the answer. The Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 provides a reliable connection for dust and drip proof Speedlite accessories that you may already own such as the Speedlite EL-1, Speedlite 600EX II-RT, Speedlite 600EX-RT, Speedlite 580EX II, ST-E3-RT or OC-E3 flash cord. The shoe adapter will also hold current accessories such as shotgun mics and on-camera LED panels securely to the camera body with dual locking pins on the multi-function shoe side."

I bet that the adapter is not needed to use these older Spedlites, if weather sealing is not an issue at the time of usage.
(Our older Speedlites, will work just fine)
If weather sealing is desired, then the adapter would be desirable.

I ordered an adapter, and the larger eye-cup, at the same time I pre-ordered the camera.
I look forward to obtaining a spare hot shoe cover, if and when they become available.

Yeah I figured I would get roasted for the comment. But its just how I feel about a lot of the mirrorless technology and the direction of the photography trade........ Its all about the auto modes and letting the camera do the work. Good or bad its frustrating for me. My 1D DSLR cameras have no problem getting shots I want to get. I understand how they work and I have the AF systems mastered. I dont have problems getting shots are creating with a camera.

Hard for me to want to invest 6k for an R3 or 4K with an R5 when good DSLR's like the 1Dx2 and 1Dx3 are on the market. I know everyone is Giddy about mirrorless....thats the gear junkie in you thats coming out in my opinion.

The justification comments about mirrorless are hilarious to me. I wonder how many of you are actually selling these shots that you can only get from the mirrorless technology V/S people like me that sell everything we shoot with DSLR's ????. My cameras are just tools for me that allow me to make $$. Im still very happy with my 1Dx2. I love the 500 F4 and all of my L glass. I am begrudgingly stepping into mirrorless next year. I really dont have any choice if i want to continue doing what I do

R3 has my attention more so than the R5. The R6 is something thats a waste of $$$ for me with a 1Dx2 in my bag.

So don't go mirrorless. If you are happy with the 1D series, why change? No one has to justify their decision to go mirrorless or to stay with DSLRs and no one has to meet your expectations regarding levels of skill needed to get a shot. That maybe sounds harsher than I mean it to be, but if you are happy with your camera, great.

I really dont have a choice. Everything from Canon, except the 1Dx3, is going to be mirrorless. At some point I have to jump in. I fully expect the announcement of the 1D equal for a mirrorless body within the next 6 months. Especially after the Nikon announcement.....that will kill off the DSLR line up

Yeah, you do have a choice, at least until all of your DSLRs die. Get a 1Dx3 or two and ensure that your can use a DSLR for a long time.

The fact that a mirrorless version of the 1D will happen doesn't mean that you will have to upgrade. You don't HAVE to buy new equipment as long as the cameras that you have work and do what you need. And when you do have to go mirrorless, you can disable the autofocus assist features that you don't like.

Most of us could, if we're honest.

Lots of people went mirrorless for size and weight. I don't care about either of those

I don't consider mirrorless to be particularly lightweight. Heck, if I want light and portable, I use my phone.

Camera upgrades, as we all probably know, usually include a lot of ancillary upgrades: software, cards, storage (!), on and on.

There's a great deal to be said for staying with what you have.

I like this saying: The less you want, the more you have.
