House Finch & how they avoid cactus needles. Several people have wondered how some of these desert birds are able to perch on cactus limbs without impaling themselves. Here's a close-up crop showing how they position their talons on and in between the needles. In all the years I've been photographing southwest birds, I've only seen the aftermath of one who missed its landing and it was not pretty. So, the odds are heavily favoring the birds.

Lately I’ve been looking for props in antique shops. I thought this scale was perfect.
Used a RF 70-200

Great find on the scale, and two beautiful photographs.

Incredible agility.
Do they just fly into land like on other less hazardous landing strips or appear to take caution in their approach to landing?

A true pin point landing for it lands on a pin.

Many of the birds will take their approach very carefully and will typically hover above the branch before they settle in for the landing. Others, like the Cactus Wren or Verdin will fly right into the cactus without so much as a second thought.

Definitely frameworthy. I love the antique feel.
