I grew up in Oregon so have some childhood memories and history they also go by the "needles"

Needles I've heard. We've toyed with the idea of moving to the PNW in our older years. How is the living up there?

Bad photography day today....

Went out for sunrise photo's and ended up underestimating the tidal changes. I got stuck out on the extremely slippery rocks and on the way back to shore ended up falling, getting scratched up and dunking my camera and lens in the process. I think I may have bricked my camera, but am giving it some time to dry and see what happens.

I'm really frustrated at myself because I was waiting for good light to happen and should have trusted my instincts to leave earlier and regroup. Ironically the clouds came in about 20 minutes later and would have made for some great shots if I wouldn't have been stubborn. Here are some shots I managed to capture. I didn't care for the sky much. I also forgot to change my ISO from a previous shoot and had to cleanup with Topaz.

Wonderful but costly images Daniel. Glad you weren't hurt badly.

My favorite wing position of almost any bierd. I call it the shroud; worn this time by a Red-shouldered Hawk.

The last time a camera made me say wow was when I first got delivery of the Canon 5D Mark II. This past weekend the Sony A1 made me say wow. The files and images and shutter speed. Man. Even my wife said wow. Just really happy I stuck with my gut and went right to the top with the A1.

I had that same feeling when I stepped up to the 5D2. I still kinda miss the dreamy look of those files with a wide open prime lens. But I have had that same feeling with Sony...the R2, the a9 and now the A1. But the A1 is on another level.

The color is probably one of the biggest things, the color looks so good, I don't find myself working the WB and tint as much. And of course, the resolution. This one is from my last trip, and will be the subject of the next Episode that will go up tomorrow. I made 4 little detail shots out of it in the video, and cropped them all to 16:9...only to find out that each of them was still over the 4k resolution!

Update on my camera situation. I did kill it. Good news is that it was insured, so I was able to order a replacement with some extra funds to spare. I decided to pick up a used a7r III since it has always worked for me and nothing really compelled me to pick up an a7r IV instead (for my uses).

I might add an a1 down the road, but I figure I'll want a backup anyway at that time. I really want to try out the Z9 with the 500 PF before deciding what I want to use for my wildlife kit long term.

Haha, yeah they are not small. But I will say, the A1 is getting bigger and closer. The small size and lightness factor is diminishing...roughly 2 ounces different between the 5d2 and A1

This is a bit of a “help me choose” post to try and help me stop going round in circles and make a decision. Narrowed my MacBook Pro choices down to the following -

1 - 14” M1 Pro 10 core cpu 16 core gpu (top spec M1 pro option) + 32 gb ram and 2 TB ssd

2 - 14” M1 Max 10 core cpu 32 core gpu (top spec M1 max option) + 32 gb ram and 1 TB ssd

So basically bigger SSD or more gpu cores. Both are exactly the same price.

Anyone in the know able to help steer me one way or another?

It depends what is more important to you GPU performance or hard drive space. if you're using Adobe for photos and not doing any video editing go with option 1.

If you use Capture One and or do a lot of video option 2 is better.

Fast forward to the 26:10 mark and this guy (external link) runs through the options fairly well.

Thanks, I’ll watch the video tonight. I want to do photo editing on the adobe suite and video editing on FCP but 4K will be my max. By all accounts the M1 pro should be great for that. Just can’t stop thinking about the max though

Edit - just looked up a comparison between the i9-9900k (my desktop processor) and the M1 pro and the pro kicks it’s ass. I reckon that will be perfect for me then cos the i9 is already fast enough for everything I do. Wish I’d thought of checking that sooner!

At this rate, I'll be getting a new camera body before you pick up a new MacBook!! ;-)a :p
